NH3 from farmland has serious impacts on human health and ecosystems. To reduce NH3 volatilization and increase yield, biochar is applied. A field experiment was carried out to study NH3 volatilization loss, and summer maize yield was analysed under different irrigation schemes with different amounts of biochar. Two irrigation schemes, I1 (67.5 mm) and I2 (121.5 mm), were set up according to the irrigation habits of local producers. Three biochar application rates were selected: C1 (0 t ha-1), C2 (20 t ha-1) and C3 (40 t ha-1). The relationship between NH3 volatilization and influencing factors, including NH4+-N concentration, NO3--N concentration, pH in the 0~20 cm soil layer and temperature, was investigated. The results showed that the yield significantly (p<0.05) increased by 17.27%~46.67% after applying biochar. Compared with C1, NH3 volatilization significantly (p<0.05) decreased by 28.98%~31.63% in C2, while that in C3 significantly (p<0.05) increased by 22.64%~73.87%. The effects of biochar on NH3 volatilization were consistent under different irrigation conditions. Compared to I1, I2 not only increased the yield of summer corn but also increased the risk of NH3 volatilization and leaching. NH3 volatilization was positively correlated with NH4+-N concentration, pH and temperature, but it was negatively correlated with NO3--N concentration. These results suggest that the optimal application amount of biochar for summer maize ranges from 14.59 t ha-1 to 17.19 t ha-1 in the study area.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) primarily relies depends mainly on groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes. The study was therefore aimed to identify groundwater quality in Al-Jouf Region, KSA using water quality index (DWQI). In addition, investigating the hydro-chemical characteristics that control the groundwater quality. Groundwater samples were collected from 150 groundwater wells at a 300-500 m depth and subjected for chemical analysis. The values of chemical constituents were compared with the KSA and World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking and irrigation purposes. The results indicated that, the concentrations of ions were within the ranges of KSA for drinking water and WHO. Based on DWQI data, for drinking water about 23.9% of the wells were within poor water category (III), while 9.91% was very poor water within (IV) group, 45.6% is good water of group (II) and 20.5% is excellent water within category (I). Regarding the evaluation of water quality, the estimated DWQI values for the 150 well waters in Al-Jouf, region ranged from 40.7 to 319. About 23.9% of wells were considered poor water “class (III)”, 9.9% were very poor water “class (IV)”, 45.6% were good water for drinking or “class (II), and 20.53% were excellent water. The result shows that the groundwater possess moderate to high salinity hazards with low to medium sodium hazards. The piper diagram showed that cations were decreasing as follow: Na+>Ca2+>Mg2+, while the anions were decreasing as follow Cl− > HCO3− > SO42−>CO32-. The SAR values varied from 0.68 to 15.43; while Kelly’s ratio (KR) ranged between 0.32 to 4.02. The calculated IWQI values of all wells revealed that water was moderate type in which its value was between 22 to -27.

Afield experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of two compounds of potassium humate and silicate, combined with compost to decrease the harmful effects of water salinity on potato crop yield and quality, also, the soil available nutrient NPK. The main plots were assigned for the irrigation treatments; 0.5 (W1), 2.25 (W2) and 5.7 ds m -1 (W3). The sub-plots treatments were; F0 (without compost applying), F1 (compost applying to soil), F2 (compost applying to soil plus foliar spraying by potassium silicate solution (10 cm 3 .L) ), F3 (applying compost to soil plus coated tubers with potassium silicate, F4 (compost applying to soil plus foliar spraying with potassium humate) and F5 (compost applying to soil plus coated tubers with potassium humate) . The findings demonstrated that the majority of vegetative growth characteristics, tuber quality and tuber yield were impacted by increasing the salinity of irrigation water in both seasons. Spraying potato plants twice with potassium humate or silicate solutions had a notable positive impact on all of the studied characteristics. Comparing to the control treatment, results showed spraying potassium silicate had a high significant influence on growth characters, yield and yield components of potato in both seasons. It could be concluded that, spraying potato plants twice with potassium silicate solution in the presence of the applied compost to the soil ( F2 ) is the most efficient treatment for reducing the harmful effects of irrigation water salinity on potato and yield quality, and improving the available nutrient levels, NPK, in the soil
