Effect of Aldrin on Life History Characteristics of Rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas

Abstract: The organochlorine insecticide aldrin is commonly used in intensive agriculture, and demonstrates estrogenic activity. Rotifers such as Brachionus calyciflorus are favored test animals in aquatic toxicology because of their more sensitivity to most toxicants. In the tested concentration range of 0.04-1.28 mg/L, aldrin shortened significantly the durations of embryonic development. Lower concentrations of aldrin had an intriguing effect on the reproduction of the rotifers and are beneficial to their survival. D… Show more

“…In a previous study, we found that aldrin at 20-640 mg.L x1 significantly increased the r by means of lifetable techniques with B. calyciflorus , which was absolutely similar to our present results that aldrin at 10 mg.L x1 significantly increased the r. Another study results showed that dieldrin at 100 mg.L x1 significantly decreased r of B. calyciflorus (Huang et al, 2012), which was similar to our present results that dieldrin at 0.001 and 0.1 mg.L x1 significantly decreased it, but dieldrin at 100 mg.L x1 did not affect it significantly. Furthermore, chlordecone at 0.05 mg.L x1 significantly increased the r of B. calyciflorus, which was different from …”

“…Up to now, there are few studies about the effects of aldrin , dieldrin (Huang et al, 2012) and chlordecone to rotifer B. calyciflorus by means of life table techniques. However, the effects of these three OCPs on the sexual reproduction of B. calyciflorus are unknown.…”

“…The population growth of rotifers decreased under the stress of all the tested pollutants with estrogenic activity for vertebrates Sarma 1986, 1990;Fernandez-Casalderrey et al 1991Ferrando et al 1993;Janssen et al 1994;Snell and Carmona 1995;Gallardo et al 1997;Preston et al 2000;Preston and Snell 2001;Radix et al 2002;MarirazPerez et al 2004;Xi and Feng 2004;Marcial et al 2005;Chu et al 2005), except micromolar concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid, growth hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin and 5-hydroxytryptamine, which increased the population growth of B. plicatilis, aldrin and DBP, which increased the intrinsic rate of population increase of B. calyciflorus and D. magna (Gallardo et al 1997;Huang et al 1999Huang et al , 2007, and juvenile hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone and tri-iodothyronine, which had no effect on population growth (Gallardo et al 1997). In the present study, BBP at 50 and 500 lg l -1 increased the intrinsic rate of population increase of the rotifers, but the reverse was also true for DBP at 50 lg l -1 .…”

“…The above stated results indicate that sublethal concentrations of pollutants with endocrine disrupting activity might be beneficial to not only the reproduction but also the survival of rotifers. Several studies have found that sublethal concentrations of aldrin and chlordecone prolonged the generation time of rotifers, but Cu, lindane, thiophanate-methyl and deltamethrin shortened the generation time of rotifers (Janssen et al 1994;Xi and Hu 2003;Xu et al 2005;Huang et al 2007;Zha et al 2007). In the present study, DBP and BBP, both at 500 lg l -1 , prolonged the generation time of B. calyciflorus, but DEHP at 0.005-5,000 lg l -1 did not affect it.…”
