Coumarins are widely present in a variety of plants and have a variety of pharmacological activities. In this study, we isolated a coumarin compound from Microsorium fortunei (Moore) Ching; the compound was identified as esculetin by hydrogen and carbon spectroscopy. Its anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity was investigated in vitro and in vivo. In the human hepatocellular liver carcinoma 2.2.15 cell line (HepG2.2.15) transfected with HBV, esculetin effecting inhibited the expression of the HBV antigens and HBV DNA in vitro. Esculetin inhibited the expression of Hepatitis B virus X (HBx) protein in a dose-dependent manner. In the ducklings infected with duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV), the levels of DHBV DNA, duck hepatitis B surface antigen (DHBsAg), duck hepatitis B e-antigen (DHBeAg), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) decreased significantly after esculetin treatment. Summing up the above, the results suggest that esculetin efficiently inhibits HBV replication both in vitro and in vivo, which provides an opportunity for further development of esculetin as antiviral drug.

Jeruju (Acanthus ilicifolius) is abundant in mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia and has high antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the many uses of hazardous chemicals in anti-acne creams are the reason for the need of alternative natural ingredients for making anti-acne creams. So that in this study the use of jeruju leaf extract was added as an active ingredient of anti-acne cream. This research method was carried out by extracting the leaves of jeruju using ethanol solvent then made anti acne cream with extract concentrations of 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%. After that, sensory testing, TPC, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity against acne-causing bacteria, namely Propionibacterium acne were carried out. The results of the antibacterial activity test of the four concentrations against P.acne produced inhibition zones with a range of values, namely 10.35-12.72 mm.. In testing the antioxidant activity, the best results were obtained at a concentration of 15% extract with an IC50 value of 98.80 ppm. From these results it can be concluded that jeruju is proven to inhibit P.acne bacteria, so that it has the potential to be used as an active ingredient in making anti-acne creams. Suggestions that can be given for further research are to make jeruju extract into a form that is more acceptable to consumers in terms of odor and color without reducing its content.

Medicinal plants are of undoubted value, as they have been used for centuries to treat various diseases and health disorders in almost every part of the world. In several studies, the use of medicinal plants was found effective in treatment of infectious and non-infectious diseases. The World Health Organization has been working for many years to identify all surviving medicinal plants on the earth. An important step has also been taken by the Natural Health Product Regulation of Canada for promotion and usages of natural products. At present, the rapidly growing population of the world is facing many challenges from various infectious diseases that are associated with hepatitis A, B and C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, influenza virus, dengue virus and new emerging viruses. Hepatitis B virus causes a severe and frequently transmittable disease of the liver. Millions of people worldwide suffer from hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The drugs available on the market for the treatment of hepatitis B are not sufficient and also cause side effects in patients suffering from HBV infection. The pharmaceutical companies are searching for suitable alternative and natural inhibitors of HBV. Therefore, it is important to explore and use plants as a source of new medicines to treat this infectious disease, because single plants contain a priceless pool of active ingredients which could help in the production of pharmaceutical-grade peptides or proteins. However, the knowledge of the antiviral activity of medicinal plants is still limited.
