Abstract. Advances and challenges in the field of bitumen polymer modification for road construction during the last 40 years are reviewed in this paper. The history of bitumen polymer modification is described chronologically. Some popular plastomers and thermoplastic elastomers in bitumen modification are discussed regarding their advantages and disadvantages, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), ethylene-butyl acrylate (EBA), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprenestyrene (SIS) and styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS). Although these polymers all improve bitumen properties to some extent, there are still some drawbacks limiting the future development of bitumen polymer modification, such as high cost, low ageing resistance and poor storage stability of polymer modified bitumen (PMB). Researchers attempted various ways to remove these drawbacks. Some technical developments for removing drawbacks are reviewed in this paper, including saturation, sulfur vulcanization, adding antioxidants, using hydrophobic clay minerals, functionalization and application of reactive polymers. The future development of polymers for bitumen modification is analyzed as well. Since it is currently challenging to perfectly achieve all expected PMB properties at the same time, some compromised recommendations are given in this paper, among which greatly enhancing the properties with an acceptably high cost, significantly reducing the cost with relatively poor properties and their combinations. Functionalization is emphasized as a promising way to enhance the properties of currently used polymers and develop new-type polymer modifiers with much greater success in the future. It is also recommended that future research on bitumen polymer modification focuses more on function development towards enhancing: adhesion with aggregates, long-term performance and recyclability.

Abstract. The compounding properties of construction materials for pavements strongly depend on dynamic viscosity of the binder. The favorable class of binder is plasticized sulfur-extended asphalt. Unfortunately, the viscosity of such a binder has not been studied in detail. In the present work we have performed experimental two-factor sequential constrained optimization of the viscosity. The binders under examination were made of asphalt, sulfur and paraffin. It was revealed that the addition of sulfur and paraffin leads to a significant decrease of the dynamic viscosity. The obtained results allowed us to estimate mixture and temperature that correspond to optimal compounding properties of the sulfur-extended asphalt concrete. In particular, for plasticized asphalt concrete with 30% of sulfur and 5% of paraffin, the optimal processing temperature is 25 0 C lower than for ordinary asphalt. Since low preparation temperatures correspond to low emission of toxic gases and low processing costs, we can consider the concretes that will be based on plasticized sulfur-extended asphalt as green paving materials.

In this study, waste crumb rubber and sulfur were utilized to enhance the performance of asphalt binder for pavement applications. About 20-50% of sulfur and 1-6% crumb rubber were used. Melt properties were investigated using thermal analysis, dynamic and steady shear rheology, and artificial aging. Rheological tests were carried out in ARES rheometer. Both steady and dynamic shear rheology showed that crumb rubber improved the viscoelastic properties of the sulfur-extended asphalt binder. Crumb rubber modification reduced temperature susceptibility of sulfur/asphalt, and increased the upper grading (performance) temperature of sulfur asphalt. The combined effect of sulfur and crumb rubber reduced the activation energy compared with that of pure asphalt. Zero-shear viscosity and strategic highway research program rutting parameter (G*/sind) improved by crumb rubber incorporation into the sulfur asphalt binder. Short-term aging improved G*/sind with slight increase in activation energy. The addition of sulfur to asphalt matrix increased the viscoelastic properties (G 0 and G 00 ) of sulfur asphalt. The addition of crumb rubber to sulfur asphalt enhanced the temperature resistance of the binder. Utilization of waste crumb rubber and sulfur in asphalt modification proved to enhance asphalt pavement life. In addition, utilization of such wastes can help in meeting the extra demand for asphalt, reduce the pavement cost, and help in solving a waste disposal problem.low-temperature performance of polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) was of great concern. For hot climates, such as Saudi Arabia, the high-temperature performance is important for modified asphalt binders. Limited number of publications used sulfur to modify asphalt with SBS polymer and the amount of sulfur was limited to 5-10%. 5,6 The function of sulfur in asphalt paving mixture depends on the sulfur concentration and the sulfur-asphalt ratio. At low sulfur content, where sulfur/asphalt ratio is less than 0.2, sulfur modifies the chemical and rheological properties of asphalt through chemical reactions. At high sulfur/asphalt ratio (>0.2 L), sulfur acts as filler and "structuring agent," improving the workability of the sulfurasphalt aggregate mixture at processing temperatures (130-160 C) and the mechanical strength of the mixture at service temperatures. 7
