The widespread use of antibiotics all over the world increases the risk of many metabolic diseases by altering the gut microbiota. Grape by‐products are of particular interest in the prevention of metabolic diseases, while only minimum amounts of these wastes are up‐graded or recycled at present. The study investigated the effect of grape pomace (GPE) and seed (GSE) polyphenol extracts on the recovery of gut microbiota after antibiotic cocktail treatment in high‐fat diet‐fed (HFD) mice. C57BL/6J mice were fed HFD together with antibiotic treatment by drinking water for 3 weeks. Then, GPE and GSE were supplemented for 7 days after withdrawal of antibiotics. The gut microbiota was characterized by a significant loss of diversity and certain important taxon after a 3‐week antibiotic cocktail treatment. The GPE and GSE supplementation during the restore period of gut microbiota had some positive effects. The relative abundance of gut microbiota was improved by GPE and GSE compared to the spontaneous recovery group. And gut microbiota diversity was also greatly changed by GPE and GSE, being indicated by the changes of Verrucomicrobia and Akkermansia in feces. These findings suggested that grape polyphenol extracts have a great influence on the recovery of gut microbiota after antibiotics and high‐fat diet treatment.

There is emerging evidence that an unhealthy dietary pattern may increase the risk of developing depression or anxiety, whereas a healthy dietary pattern may decrease it. This nascent research suggests that dietary interventions could help prevent, or be an alternative or adjunct therapy for, depression and anxiety. The relation, however, is complex, affected by many confounding variables, and is also likely to be bidirectional, with dietary choices being affected by stress and depression. This complexity is reflected in the data, with sometimes conflicting results among studies. As the research evolves, all characteristics of the relation need to be considered to ensure that we obtain a full understanding, which can potentially be translated into clinical practice. A parallel and fast-growing body of research shows that the gut microbiota is linked with the brain in a bidirectional relation, commonly termed the microbiome–gut–brain axis. Preclinical evidence suggests that this axis plays a key role in the regulation of brain function and behavior. In this review we discuss possible reasons for the conflicting results in diet–mood research, and present examples of areas of the diet–mood relation in which the gut microbiota is likely to be involved, potentially explaining some of the conflicting results from diet and depression studies. We argue that because diet is one of the most significant factors that affects human gut microbiota structure and function, nutritional intervention studies need to consider the gut microbiota as an essential piece of the puzzle.

Lily bulbs’ polyphenols extract ameliorates oxidative stress and lipid accumulation in vitro and in vivo

BACKGROUND Polyphenols have the potential to reduce the risk of many metabolic disorders. Lily bulbs are rich in polyphenols; however, their effects on lipid metabolism remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the effects of lily bulbs’ polyphenols (LBPs) on oxidative stress and lipid metabolism. RESULTS A total of 14 polyphenolic compounds in LBPs were identified by high‐performance liquid chromatography equipped with diode‐array detection mass spectrometry. Total phenolic compound in LBPs was 53.76 ± 1.12 g kg−1 dry weight. In cellular experiments, LBPs attenuated the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, impeded reactive oxygen species production, alleviated oxidative stress, and reduced lipid accumulation in oleic acid induced HepG2 cells. In in vivo studies, LBPs significantly inhibited body weight gain, reduced lipid levels in serum and liver, and improved oxidative damage in a dose‐dependent manner in mice fed a high‐fat diet. Moreover, LBPs ameliorated hepatic steatosis and suppressed the expression of hepatic‐lipogenesis‐related genes (SREBP‐1c, FAS, ACC1, and SCD‐1) and promoted lipolysis genes (SRB1 and HL) and lipid oxidation genes (PPARα and CPT‐1) in mice fed a high‐fat diet. CONCLUSION It was concluded that LBPs are a potential complementary therapeutic alternative in the development of functional foods to curb obesity and obesity‐related diseases, such as metabolic syndrome. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry
