Effect of 50% ethanolic extract of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry. (clove) on sexual behaviour of normal male rats

Abstract: Background: The flower bud of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry. (clove) has been used in Unani medicine since ancient times for the treatment of male sexual disorders. The present study is aimed to investigate the effect of 50% ethanolic extract of clove on general mating behaviour, libido, potency along with its likely gastric ulceration and adverse effects on sexually normal male albino rats.

“…Mounting behavior indices (MF and ML) as well as mounting performance indices (IF and IL) are useful indicators in the assessment of libido, potency, sexual vigor, arousability, performance, and motivation [21,22]. The significant (p < 0.05) decrease in MF and IF shows an impaired sexual desire (libido) in sexually impaired animals.…”

“…All these findings further support the potential of the extract in improving sexual function at these doses. PEI is considered an index of potency, libido, and the rate of recovery from exhaustion after the first series of mating [17]. A PEI more than 5400 s indicates that the male is sexually exhausted and the intensity of sexual behavior will be reduced in subsequent mating [15].…”

“…It also increased mounting, intromission and ejaculatory frequencies [21]. The alcoholic extract of Myristica fragrans seeds (500 mg/kg for 7 days of treatment), the extract of Syzygium aromaticum flowers (500 mg/kg for 7 days of treatment) and the formulation of Epimedium koreanum (300 mg/kg and 750 mg/kg for 10 days of treatment) increased mating and intromission frequencies, decreased the intromission and post-ejaculatory latencies in male rats [22][23][24]. The aqueous root extract of Dactylorhiza hatagirea (200 mg/kg after 28 days of treatment) stimulated rat libido, mating and ejaculatory frequencies, increased testosterone level, and decreased the intromission and post-ejaculatory latencies [25].…”
