Effect of 12 Months of Whole-Body Vibration Therapy on Bone Density and Structure in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract: Whole-body vibration therapy at 0.3g and 90 or 30 Hz for 12 months did not alter BMD or bone structure in postmenopausal women who received calcium and vitamin D supplementation.

“…Populations with injury, illness, or disease may produce very different results. Investigators have examined therapeutic WBV in populations with osteoporosis 35,36 and obesity, 37,38 but few 39 have examined the effect of WBV on blood-flow and oxygenation measures in special populations. Research needs to be conducted on the dose-response of WBV after repeated treatments and the training effects of WBV on measures of blood flow and muscle oxygenation.…”

“…In regards to bone-related variables measured by pQCT, there are two studies that tested the effects of 6 and 12 months of WBV therapy in postmenopausal women, 28,29 showing both of them no changes in bone characteristics following the training period. In this respect, our results show that a short-term WBV training programme led to a slight weakening of some bone geometry parameters, especially at the tibia, in elderly men and women.…”

“…Twelve months of whole-body vibration therapy showed no significant effect on bone outcomes in healthy postmenopausal women assessed by high-resolution pQCT and DXA compared to no vibration therapy (58). Another study involving healthy men and women ranging in age from 65 to 102 years did not show any significant benefit of daily 10 minutes of vibration therapy after 24 months intervention compared to placebo on the basis of QCT-derived volumetric BMD at the hip and spine (21).…”
