Objective: to analyze in the scientific literature the evidence on nasogastric/nasoenteric tube related adverse events in adult patients. Method: integrative literature review through the search of publications in journals indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, EMBASE and Scopus, and hand searching, was undertaken up to April 2017. Results: the sample consisted of 69 primary studies, mainly in English and published in the USA and UK. They were divided in two main categories and subcategories: the first category refers to Mechanical Adverse Events (respiratory complications; esophageal or pharyngeal complications; tube obstruction; intestinal perforation; intracranial perforation and unplanned tube removal) and the second alludes to Others (pressure injury related to fixation and misconnections). Death was reported in 16 articles. Conclusion: nasogastric/nasoenteric tube related adverse events are relatively common and the majority involved respiratory harm that resulted in increased hospitalization and/or death. The results may contribute to healthcare professionals, especially nurses, to develop an evidence-based guideline for insertion and correct positioning of bedside enteral tubes in adult patients.

Objective to map the production of knowledge about the different techniques of gastrointestinal tube insertion in critically ill and/or coma patients. Method scope review carried out in December 2020 in ten data sources, following the assumptions established by the Joanna Briggs Institute (2020) and the PRISMA-ScR protocol. Results 25 studies were selected and analyzed, identifying as the main techniques for insertion of gastrointestinal tube in critically ill and/or coma patients: techniques without the aid of instrumentals, such as head flexion, lateral neck pressure, tube freezing, measurement with corrected formula of the tip of the ear-lobe tip-xiphoid process, Sellick´s maneuver, cricoid cartilage compression, SORT maneuver and gastric insufflation. In addition to techniques with the aid of instruments, such as the use of laryngoscopes and video laryngoscopes. It is noteworthy that, in order to facilitate insertion, the use of ultrasound examination, radiological, endoscopic and fluoroscopy were also identified. Conclusions the evidence analyzed reveals that there is no specific gastrointestinal tube insertion technique for universally accepted critically ill patients.

Intravesical instillation of Bacillus-Calmette-Guerin (BCG), a live-attenuated-strain of Mycobacterium bovis , is an established treatment for superficial bladder carcinoma. Although generally well tolerated, 1/15,000 patients can develop life-threatening disseminated-BCG-infection typically soon after the procedure, a condition colloquially termed BCG-osis. Side-effects of intravesical BCG instillation including fever, chills, fatigue are common but BCG-osis is rare and severe, oftentimes requiring intensive care unit admission and triple anti-TB-therapy as in this case. It is therefore important for clinicians to recognize this possibility as the absence of specific signs and symptoms, coupled with the fastidious nature of the Mycobacteria, pose a diagnostic dilemma in the acute setting. Our case highlights this potential rare iatrogenic side effect of intravesical BCG treatment and the risk associated with non-treatment of BCG-osis.
