Show more

“…Alternate temperatures favored germination in seeds of Syngonanthus elegantulus Ruhland, S. elegans (Bong.) Ruhland and S. venustus Silveira (Oliveira and Garcia, 2005), but had no effect on the germination of seeds of some species of Eremanthus (Velten and Garcia, 2005), Schizocentron elegans Meissn. and Tibouchina gracilis (Bonpl.)…”

“…The production of achenes by species of Eremanthus is high, but many of them do not complete their development or suffer predation by insects. In apparently viable achenes of E. elaeagnus E. glomerulatus, about 91% and 70%, respectively, had no embryos (Velten and Garcia, 2005). In V. herbacea, 15% of the achenes did not have viable embryos according to the tetrazolium test (Sassaki et al, 1999a).…”

“…Therefore, testing germination under a wide range of physical conditions is especially recommended (see Finch-Savage & Leubner-Metzger 2006 for a discussion on light and dormancy). Second, many species have high proportions of embryoless seeds, including Melastomataceae (Simão et al 2007;Silveira et al, 2012), Asteraceae (Velten & Garcia 2005;Galastri & Oliveira 2010;Le Stradic 2012) and Poaceae (Le Stradic 2012). The proportion of embryoless seeds can be over 95% (Gupta & Murty 1986).…”
