The chemical composition of wood is important to assess the quality of this raw material for the industry of cellulosic pulp production. The purpose of this work was to determine the chemical composition of Eucalyptus spp. grown for cellulosic pulp production. Ten Eucalyptus spp. clones with six years of age, located in the municipality of Itamarandiba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were used. Quantification was obtained for extractives, monosaccharides, uronic acids, acetates, lignin, ash and the phenolic composition of the extracts. In average, clones showed around 2.7% extractives, with a predominance of polar compounds soluble in ethanol and water; 27.7% lignin and 0.3% ash. Glucose was the main sugar detected (64.2%), followed by xylose (19.3%). The main components of the extractives were steroids, fatty acids and aromatic acids, followed by smaller amounts of substituted alkanoic acids, fatty alcohols, glycerol derivatives and triterpenes. The ethanol–water extracts presented total phenol contents ranging from 321.4 to 586.6 mg EAG/g of extract, tannins from 28.1 to 65.1 mg catechin/g of extract and flavonoids from 73.6 to 256.9 mg catechin/g of extract. Clones with a higher holocellulose amount and a lower lignin content showed a higher potential for cellulosic pulp production. These findings are important for the development of high-quality wood based on important traits for the pulp and paper sector.

The softwood pulp industry is based on the supply of Pinus taeda and P. elliottii woods, and competes for this raw material with other timber sectors. The study aimed to evaluate the wood quality of Pinus patula for pulp and paper production. Trees aged 14 years were obtained from a plantation located in Ponte Alta do Norte, State of Santa Catarina/Brazil. Discs were collected along the commercial height for determining the weighted basic density and its longitudinal variation in the trees, and the chemical composition. For the anatomical characterization, a disc was extracted from the base of each tree to determine the radial variation of tracheids morphological characteristics, and their quality indexes for the production of kraft pulp. The weighted basic density (365 kg.m-3) of the wood was low when compared with other species of the same genus. Regarding the tracheids morphology, a mean length of 2.37 mm; wall thickness of 5.49 µm; width of 40.32 µm and a lumen diameter of 29.09 µm were observed. The chemical composition of the species showed low contents of lignin (25.06%) and ashes (0.27%), compatible content of holocellulose (70.76%), and high content of extractives (6.24%) compared with conifers of traditional use. In general, P. patula species shows characteristics compatible with those traditionally used for the pulp and paper production, and it should be considered in more advanced studies with this species in this segment.

The raw materials commonly used to produce pulp and paper in Brazil are woods from planted forests. Although with tremendous potential, the use of non-wood fibers is inexpressive. This study thus aimed to evaluate the use of sugarcane bagasse and bamboo to produce pulp and paper via physical, chemical and anatomical characterization, and to verify the influence of its properties on the process and the final product. Anatomical analysis of the fibers was performed (length and width from fibers and vessels, lumen width and cell wall thickness), as well as chemical component analysis (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, extractives and ash) and basic density of the materials. Moreover, felting rate, Runkel, Mulsteph and Boiler indexes, flexibility coefficient and wall fraction were generated. Results showed that both materials differed statistically in chemical properties, except for lignin content; density and anatomical properties, excluding vessel width and felting rate. Bamboo presented higher values cellulose (52.96%), minerals (2.34%), density (0.461 g/ cm³), wall fraction (67.84%) and Runkel (2.11), Mulsteph (0.90) and Boiler indices (0.81) values, whereas sugarcane bagasse presented higher hemicellulose (17.63%), extractives (12.81%) and flexibility coefficient (46.19%) values. Most properties were similar to those observed in raw materials commonly used for this purpose. Therefore, these two materials have potential for use in the pulp and paper industries.
