Eeg Analysis and Spect Imaging in Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract: Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) represent a leading public-health problem given the rising age of the population. Early diagnosis of dementia, especially at the stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has become an important goal of the modern patient work-up. Brain perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has become a mainstay of diagnostic algorithms in patients with dementia showing specific patterns of hypoperfusion in temporal and parietal lobes. Clini… Show more

“…Digital exclusion, defined as the inequity in access and capability to use information and communications technologies (ICTs) such as the internet, may be associated with cognitive impairment, although the relationship is complex and not fully understood ( Seifert, 2020 ; Wilson et al, 2022 ). On the one hand, the use of digital technologies such as WeChat, mobile payments or the Internet has been shown to have cognitive benefits, such as improved memory, attention, and problem-solving skills ( Radić et al, 2021 ; Wei et al, 2022 ). Thus, individuals with a lack of digital technology or limited digital skills may miss out on these cognitive benefits, which may lead to cognitive impairment over time.…”

“…Studies in both humans and animals have shown the cognitive benefits of mental activity and cognitive exercise [38, 39]. Complex mental activities, such as education, artistic creation, reading, and writing, are associated with a reduction in the hippocampal atrophy rate, which is a sensitive biomarker of dementia at an early stage [35, 40]. A meta-analysis indicated that cognitive activity is associated with a 23% reduction in the risk of all-cause dementia [35].…”

“…Those with cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer's, often have decreased CBF, mostly in the hippocampus, parietal, and temporal lobes which was found using SPECT scans. SPECT imaging of the brain also shows an 83% accuracy of identifying dementia [13]. SPECT imaging has a variety of uses to help detect Alzheimer's such as Aβ plaque detecting as well as inspecting CBF.…”
