Over the past few years, a new research field has emerged, focusing on the social-scientific criteria for the study of opinions toward genetically modified foods (GMFs), since these may be limiting factors for the success or failure of these products. Basic education is the first step in the Mexican education system, and teachers may wield an outsized influence on the attitudes and preferences of children, prospective future consumers of these products. To better understand the current state of knowledge of biotechnology issues and opinions toward the consumption of GMF of Mexican teachers, a questionnaire was distributed, and 362 Mexican teachers of basic education responded. The survey included questions about the benefits and risks of consuming GMF. The mean percentage of teachers expressing knowledge of a given topic in biotechnology was 50%. More than 60% of teachers believed that GMFs would be useful in preventing world hunger, while 39.2% considered GMF to be hazards for future generations. Although 47.0% reported not having enough knowledge about these topics, almost all (90.3%) respondents expressed an interest and willingness to learn about biotechnology. In light of the fact that teachers of basic education represent the first and potentially most lasting stage in the education of young children, this survey establishes the urgent need to develop strategies to improve the scientific knowledge of teachers and to facilitate decision making and the promotion of scientific and technological advances for their students. © 2017 by The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 45(5):396-402, 2017.

This study was designed to investigate the awareness regarding global warming among the College of Science students at University of Bahrain. A total of 143 science students were examined using a questionnaire that covered three aspects of global warming including causes, impacts, and solutions. The study included 51, 28, 40 and 24 students from the departments of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics respectively. The results have shown that 55 ± 10.18% of all students examined answered the questions correctly of which 51 ± 10.28% were in the first year, while 60 ± 7.4% were in their fourth year indicating a direct positive impact of university education. A significant dependence (p 6 0.05) was recorded between first and fourth year students' answers. The results have shown that fourth year biology students were the most knowledgeable, a fact that can be attributed to their academic curriculum. Therefore, the study has recommended integrating environmental concepts into the university curriculum for all students irrespective of their academic specialization in order to increase the environmental awareness.

Abstract:Global warming is one of the most critical environmental problems of 21thcentury. It is not only environmental hazard but also social and economic risk and unfortunately some adverse consequences of it are becoming visible these days. Therefore, it is a great importance for educating people and making them aware of this problem. The study was aimed to examine the effect of instruction with visual materials based on health belief model on global warming perception among university students. Quasi experimental design with pre and post-test was utilized. This study was conducted at six faculties from both scientific and literary faculties in Shebin Elkom City at Menoufia University. Systematic random sample consisted of 360 university students including 144 males and 216 females aged between 18 to 22 years old who enrolled in the first academic years of both selected scientific and literary faculties in Shebin Elkom City. The following tools were used 1. Self-administered structured questionnaire which involved socio-demographic data and knowledge of university students about global warming. 2. Perception of students about global warming based on health belief model. The main result of this study showed that there was significant improvement in the knowledge and perception of university students' about global warming after instruction with visual materials compared to before instruction. Additionally, there was statistically significant relation between students' knowledge and perception toward global warming. The current study concluded that, instruction with visual materials was effective in improving knowledge and perception of university students about global warming. This result recommended that, the need for developing and establishing of environmental protection education programs to enhance environmental awareness of all students from elementary school to university level.
