Background: Basic non-military flight nurse training is essential for enhancing nurses’ competency in conducting aeromedical evacuations. Trained nurses possessing flight nurse proficiency are indispensable for ensuring stable patient conditions amidst the unique physical, physiological, and psychological challenges encountered during flights. Objective: This study aimed to describe the experiences and perceptions of nurses and air ambulance service providers regarding aeromedical evacuations. Methods: This study employed a qualitative descriptive design. Data were gathered from February to July 2023 through semi-structured online interviews with seven nurses and air ambulance service providers engaged in aeromedical evacuation. Content analysis was utilized to interpret the interview data. Results: Seven themes were generated: 1) Experiences in aeromedical evacuation experiences, 2) Challenges faced by nurses and air ambulance service providers during aeromedical evacuations, 3) Essential knowledge for nurses involved in aeromedical evacuations, 4) Efforts to improve nurses’ knowledge and skills, 5) Leveling of flight nurse training, 6) Flight nurse training methods, and 7) Flight nurse training evaluation strategies. Conclusion: Nurses and air ambulance service providers acknowledge the significant influence of the flight environment on changes in patient conditions during aeromedical evacuations. To effectively manage alterations in patient conditions during flights, healthcare workers equipped with aviation health competency are imperative. One approach to enhancing the competency of healthcare workers is through flight nurse training. The findings from this study serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and health-related institutions endeavoring to formulate aeromedical evacuation strategies.

Objetivo: compreender a realidade laboral e perspectivas dos profissionais que integram a equipe de atendimento aeromédico de Santa Catarina. Metodologia: Estudo exploratório, descritivo, com enfoque qualitativo. Foram realizadas 17 entrevistas com profissionais que integram o serviço aeromédico de helicópteros em Santa Catarina (médicos, enfermeiros, tripulantes operacionais e pilotos de aeronave). Utilizou-se entrevista semiestruturada, transcritas e analisadas por meio de análise de conteúdo. Resultados: da análise de conteúdo temática emergiram quatro categorias: atitude e conhecimento como necessidades de trabalho; responsabilidades e desafios profissionais; atributos para o serviço aeromédico e circunstâncias expressivas na perspectiva profissional do atendimento aeromédico. As categorias refletem questões que estiveram presentes nos discursos, evidenciando a importância do conhecimento e da aptidão técnica para a estabilização do paciente de emergência na atividade aeromédica. Os desafios profissionais foram representados por imprevisibilidade de acionamentos, atendimento com locais de difícil acesso e condições climáticas desfavoráveis. Conclusão: o estudo possibilitou compreender a realidade e percepção que os profissionais do serviço aeromédico possuem a respeito do trabalho que realizam. Enquanto modalidade de atendimento de emergências, exige múltiplas competências dos profissionais envolvidos, demonstrando a importância da capacidade técnica e cognitiva para a estabilização clínica do paciente, ancorado em conhecimento sobre fisiologia de voo, segurança de voo e navegabilidade; aliado a uma resiliência física. Percebe-se a predominância de um discurso hegemônico, com destaque para o trabalho em equipe, comunicação e confiança interprofissional.

Objective The aim of our study was to describe specialist nurses’ experiences with the helicopter transport of patients critically ill with COVID-19. Method Our study followed a descriptive qualitative design anchored in the naturalistic paradigm and was based on qualitative content analysis. The study followed the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research. Results Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with specialist nurses who have cared for patients critically ill with COVID-19 during helicopter transport. The analysis of the interviews resulted in three themes—designing new routines before transport, working under new conditions and post-transport and reflections—with 11 categories. The goal of the intensive care transport of patients with COVID-19 was twofold: to prevent the spread of infection by using personal protective equipment and to prevent the contamination of the helicopter. Conclusion For the nurses, working in personal protective equipment created a feeling of distance from patients that compromised patient–nurse intimacy. Our results suggest that ensuring the sufficiency of equipment required in the event of major accidents and pandemics is critical.
