Education in Virtual Worlds: Virtual Storytelling

Abstract: This paper is dedicated to the idea of studying in virtual worlds and discusses how virtual storytelling technology (VST) can provide an educational process. We try to answer the question -is it possible to substitute a real learning environment with a fully immersive 3D virtual space? And if so, what role should a virtual teacher play and what skills should he have? We describe several advantages that virtual environment (VE) has as compared to an ordinary classroom. It enables children to explore a phenomeno… Show more

“…Cada usuario tiene la capacidad de habitarlo por tiempo indefinido haciendo uso de un avatar o personaje. La interacción con un personaje virtual aumenta la posibilidad de inmersión del usuario, con ello se abre una nueva perspectiva al aceptar roles de juego [27], de esta manera realizar ejercicios de articulación por medio de juegos interactivos, que le ayuden a mejorar las habilidades articulatorias.…”

“…The last stage in the process is the importing of the 3D map into a desktop virtual reality environment, where users are able (via avatars) to follow the road trip narrative in comic strip photo form, as plotted in (x, y, t) space. OpenSimulator was the virtual environment (VE) used for our experiment, a free emulation of the popular Second Life (which has been used to implement a classroom-based storytelling environment [57]). The underlying terrain was derived from GTopo30 data.…”

“…Digital storytelling through virtual environments (with AI agents as storytellers) is not a new idea [56]. An example in the classroom environment [57] aimed to make the virtual classroom as naturalistic as the real one. Shaw's "The Legible City" is an example of narrative in a virtual environment, with buildings constructed of 3D text [58].…”

“…Virtual storytelling is also known interactive storytelling. This technique is quite different from the others because it is more to movie and need end user responds to determining the plot of the story [13].…”
