Abstract

From 1948 through 1959, a review of the literature on fermentatioii technology appeared annually in Industrial and Engineering Chemzs-Since the term "fermentation" was liberally interpreted, virtually all types of microbiological processes were covered, as well as the general aspects of biotechnology. This yearly summary was especially useful in a field whose literature is spread through many journals in many languages.This long and valuable service was interrupted in 1960 when no review (to cover the literature of 1959) appeared. In 1961, however, a condensed version again appeared in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.I8 This was later completed by a tabulation of the 1960 literature on fermentation processes which appeared in Applied M i~r o b i o l o g y .~~ The 1961 literature was reviewed in a special publication of the American Chemical Societyl5 and again supplemented elsewhere.16This year, the review covering the fermentation literature of 1962 again appears as one unit, returning to the practice of several years ago. It has again been prepared by Richard I. Mateles, Bred H. Deindoerfer, and Arthur E. Humphrey, with the help of contributors all over the world. The Editors of Biotechnology and Bioengineering are proud to be able to present this valued and respected contribution.
