Eddies in the North Greenland Sea and Fram Strait From Satellite Altimetry, SAR and High‐Resolution Model Data

Abstract: In this study, we investigate eddy dynamics in the northern Greenland Sea and the Fram Strait using AVISO altimetry, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and Finite Element Sea ice‐Ocean Model (FESOM) high‐resolution numerical model data. In the region, eddies are thought to play an important role in the redistribution of the warmer and saltier Atlantic Water between the Arctic Ocean and the areas of deep convection in the central Greenland Sea. We found that eddies detected in AVISO and in SAR form two … Show more

“…For more than 2 decades, mooring measurements have been conducted across Fram Strait at around 79 • N to monitor the exchange of water masses through this gateway (e.g. Beszczynska-Möller et al, 2012;von Appen et al, , 2019. To assess the overall model performance in reproducing the mean state and resolving the flow variability, we use the observed hydrography as well as the velocity field and compare the latter in terms of power density spectra (PDS) and EKE to the model results.…”

“…enters the Arctic Ocean as its largest oceanic heat source. In the last decades, an increase in AW temperature has been observed in Fram Strait, with implications for the Arctic Ocean's sea ice decline (Beszczynska-Möller et al, 2012;Polyakov et al, 2012). On the other hand, some AW recirculates in Fram Strait and continues southward in the East Greenland Current (EGC; e.g.…”

“…Mesoscale eddies have been observed at various depths for different basins of the Arctic Ocean (e.g., Bashmachnikov et al., 2020; D'Asaro, 1988; Dmitrenko et al., 2008; Manley & Hunkins, 1985; Muench et al., 2000; Nishino et al., 2011; Kawaguchi et al., 2012; Kozlov et al., 2019; Padman et al., 1990; Pnyushkov et al., 2018; Timmermans et al., 2008; Woodgate et al., 2001; Zhao et al., 2014, 2016). They might influence the ocean, climate, and ecosystem in various ways.…”

“…The first dominates in the northern part of the study region (west of Spitsbergen), while the secondin its southern part (the Lofoten Basin). The imbalances form from 10 to 20% of the incoming heat and encompass the heat fluxes by the mesoscale eddies (Raj et al, 2020;Bashmachnikov et al, 2020). The imbalances lead to the observed warming of the eastern Nordic Seas.…”
