Ectopic goitrous submandibular thyroid with goitrous orthotopic thyroid gland

Abstract: Ectopic thyroid is a rare developmental anomaly with lingual thyroid accounting for majority of the cases. The presence of ectopic thyroid tissue lateral to the midline is very rare, and very few cases located in the submandibular region have been reported. The simultaneous finding of submandibular ectopic thyroid tissue and a functional orthotopic thyroid gland is even rarer. In the differential diagnosis of an ectopic submandibular thyroid, it is fundamental to exclude a metastasis from well-differentiated t… Show more

“…A failure of the lateral anlage to fuse with the median anlage or an aberrant migration with cell rests deposited laterally during the development of the gland can result in the development of lateral aberrant thyroid tissue. Other possible causes include implantation of thyroid tissue during surgery of a normal localized thyroid gland or metastasis of a thyroid carcinoma [7,8].…”

“…Qalxanabənzər vəzi , təxminən, hamiləliyin 24-cü günündə, yəni embriogenez prosesində ilk olaraq inkişaf etməyə başlayan endokrin vəzdir. [3,11,12] Bu vəz 1-ci və 2-ci udlaq kisələr arasındakı endodermal epiteli hüceyrələrindən inkişaf edir və hamiləliyin 7-ci həftəlik hestasiya dövrünə qədər normal pretraxeal bölgəyə enir. Ektopik tiroid vəzi bu enmə prosesi zamanı meydana çıxan çatışmazlıqlar nəticəsində formalaşır.…”
