Ecophysiological responses of native invasive woody Juniperus virginiana L. to resource availability and stand characteristics in the semiarid grasslands of the Nebraska Sandhills

Abstract: Vegetation in grasslands is changing at an unprecedented rate. In the Nebraska Sandhills, this shift is attributed in part to encroachment of the woody species Juniperus virginiana. We investigated changes in resource availability and their N, and N content, compared to grasslands. Water potential was higher in trees in grasslands compared to dense stand. J. virginiana in dense stand exhibited similar trends to trees in grasslands for net photosynthetic rate (P N ), stomatal conductance, transpiration, maximum… Show more

“…On the other hand, in the pluvial year of 2007, the increases of GPP and ET in PG were similar to or greater than those in JEG (Figure 2), which resulted in smaller differences of GPP and ET between JEG and PG ( Figure 4). Eastern redcedar is a species tolerant to drought (Msanne et al, 2017) and can maintain photosynthesis at low water potentials (Eggemeyer, Awada, Wedin, Harvey, & Zhou, 2006;Willson, Manos, & Jackson, 2008). “…Thus, the change ratios of GPP and ET were low in the pluvial condition than those of drought condition. Under low water availability, eastern redcedar can access the deep soil water and their roots can reach a depth of up to 7 m (Msanne et al, 2017). “…Improving our understanding of how invasive species interact and respond to changes in the environment, particularly changes in climate and hydrology, can enhance management practices in riparian areas (Margolis, Meko, & Touchan, 2011;Msanne et al, 2017;Mykleby et al, 2016;Rood et al, 2007;Tene et al, 2011). The use of tree-ring methods for ecological purposes, that is, dendroecology, provides the tools to study tree responses to localized biotic and abiotic environment.…”
