Economic Spill-Over of Food Quality Schemes on Their Territory

Abstract: We study the effect of a set of food quality scheme (FQS) products within the local economy using a local multiplier approach based on LM3 methodology. To evaluate the effective contribution within the local area, we compare each FQS product with its equivalent standard/conventional counterpart. Local multiplier allows us to track the financial flows converging within the local area at the different levels of the supply chain so that we can measure the FQS product role in local economic activation. Overall, th… Show more

“…In their review of the literature on GI impact on rural economies, T€ or€ ok et al (2020) find mixed evidence and highlight several conditions that need to be fulfilled for GIs to substantially contribute to rural development, such as strong traditions, organizational capacity and institutional support. Donati et al (2020) find a major positive contribution of PGI production to the local economy, especially in animal production sectors. Mattas et al (2020) review the literature and find especially strong spillovers from PDO products to rural development, indicating also indirect benefits for other rural sectors and the preservation of cultural heritage.…”

“…Agri‐food markets require vertical coordination that matches supply and demand between different actors in the food value chains, consisting of producers, processors, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers. Transaction costs theory explains relationships between buyers and sellers in terms of the costs of carrying out transactions that include finding buyers; evaluating partners; negotiating prices, quantities, and quality standards; delivering the commodity; and obtaining payment; as well as consisting of the potential risks (Donati et al, 2021; Grosh, 1994; Minot & Sawyer, 2016). Transaction costs can arise because of the existence of asymmetric information, bounded rationality, and the possibility of opportunistic behavior (Williamson, 1979).…”
