Economic feasibility of intensification of Macrobrachium rosenbergii hatchery

Abstract: Inadequate seed supply remains a bottleneck for the expansion of the Macrobrachium rosenbergii production industry. Nevertheless, the limitation is not technical, and thus, we presumed that fragile production chains and economic feasibility might be the major issues. Therefore, we investigated the intensification as a way to improve the system's profitability and resilience. We have reported relevant costs and revenues of hypothetical hatcheries stocking 50, 100, and 140 larvae per L in clear water recirculati… Show more

“…We then compared partial budgets for gasius farming (Pham et al, 2016). In this study, we performed MCA analysis according to the method of David et al (2018) using the software @Risk Simulator (Beijing NDTimes Information Company). We obtained two higher profitable treatments via the above preliminary partial budget analysis and then evaluated the production risks (sensitivity analysis) based on the stochastic input variables that had an important impact on the IRR, NPV and PP, such as selling price per kg prawns, feed price and annual production cycles.…”

“…We obtained two higher profitable treatments via the above preliminary partial budget analysis and then evaluated the production risks (sensitivity analysis) based on the stochastic input variables that had an important impact on the IRR, NPV and PP, such as selling price per kg prawns, feed price and annual production cycles. The 1,000 iterations were in accordance with the report of David et al (2018), and the simulation generated probability distributions for the IRR, NPV and PP. For the selling price per kg prawns and the feed price, it was considered three fixed variations ( −5%, 0%, and 5%) of the base scenario.…”

“…Although M. rosenbergii naturally inhabits in freshwater, ovigerous prawn migrates towards brackish water for spawning. Thus, hatcheries routinely use salinities of 10-12‰ in for commercial PL production (David et al, 2016(David et al, , 2018Hosain, Amin, Kamarudin et al, 2021;New, 2010).…”

“…Due to the excellences of giant freshwater prawn caused vivid giant freshwater prawn culture in some countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and North Australia. Nowadays, giant freshwater prawn culture is massively developed in various countries, such as in United States of America and China (Akter et al, 2014;Zafar et al, 2015;David et al, 2018). In 2009-2012, the production of giant freshwater prawn has contributed over 57.1% of the total production of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium sp.…”
