Economic Factors and Incentives for Ocean Wave Energy Conversion

Abstract: Ocean energy conversion systems have recently seen renewed interest, stimulated mostly by today's increasing energy discussions. In addition to ocean current energy converters, several commercial ocean wave energy projects have already been undertaken, but no clear economic model exists for developers to follow. Therefore, this paper focuses on U.S. economic factors that affect the use of wave power for generation of electric energy. These are addressed with regards to economic and business incentives for rene… Show more

“…Wave energy, in particular, is spatially more concentrated than both wind and solar energy; it is also more persistent and predictable than wind energy. The global wave power resource has been estimated to be at least 1 TW, with a potential annual energy production of about 2000 TWh; this is comparable to the energy production from nuclear or hydropower [1][2][3][4].…”
