Economic Efficiency of Extensive and Intensive Shrimp Production under Conditions of Disease and Natural Disaster Risks in Khánh Hòa and Trà Vinh Provinces, Vietnam

Abstract: Uncertainty about efficiency and sustainability of shrimp production due to diseases and climatic events may prevent Vietnam from attaining US $10 million target from shrimp exports by 2025. We surveyed 120 and 159 shrimp farmers from Khánh Hòa and Trà Vinh provinces, respectively, to obtain information on their input use, production levels and the effects of diseases and climate change events on their farm profitability. Stochastic production frontier analysis (SFA) discovered that the number of workers, crop… Show more

“…Semi-intensive and intensive methods are characterized by high stocking densities, a combination of natural and artificial feeds, the presence of periodic water quality measurements, and greater business capital (Oddsson 2020). In response to the high demand for whiteleg shrimp, many farmers have implemented intensive systems because they can significantly increase shrimp production (Nguyen et al 2020).…”

“…The short-term issue is the matter how to control the economy to avoid inflation, unemployment and balance of payments deficit. At the same time, long-term problem is the way to keep the economic growth sustained (Ding et al, 2017) and economic efficiency (Nguyen et al, 2020).…”

“…A high level of ammonia is distinctly influenced by the density due to the high waste of feces and uneaten feed. Superintensive culture often faces eutrophication due to excessive nutrient and organic waste (Nguyen et al, 2019;Nguyen et al, 2020). Nevertheless, nitrification was run by the bacteria to maintain the ammonia-nitrogen content.…”
