Economic burden associated with acute myeloid leukemia treatment

Abstract: The economic burden associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is poorly defined and understudied. The goal of this study is estimate the direct cost of illness for AML in the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK), by conducting a comprehensive literature review and calculating the average direct cost-of-illness per patient for the first 6 months of therapy. Patients were grouped by therapy: intensive chemotherapy alone; induction chemotherapy followed by allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSC… Show more

“…Zeidan et al, for example, estimated the mean cost of AML treatment in the USA by conducting a comprehensive literature review and calculating the average direct cost (2012 US dollars) per patient for the first 6 months of therapy. Results suggested that allogeneic HSCT was the most expensive treatment pathway ($352,682) followed by intensive chemotherapy ($324,502), low-intensity chemotherapy ($57,039), and best supportive care only ($14,014) [14].…”

“…e impact of leukemia in developing countries is enormous due to premature death of children, loss of parents, loss of productivity due to a disability, and high medical cost that affects the socioeconomic and health welfare of the population [19][20][21]. While leukemia is dealt with very well in the developed world, there is little evidence on the current status of the disease in Ethiopia in general and in the study area in particular.…”

“…According to studies in the United States and the United Kingdom, the cost of transplantation is higher than other interventions, followed by the cost of induction and then consolidation chemotherapy [27].…”
