Economic Analysis of Geopolymer Brick Manufacturing: A French Case Study

Abstract: This paper presents an economic analysis of manufacturing geopolymer bricks for use in the construction sector. The manufacturing processes of both geopolymer bricks and traditional fired bricks were investigated. For this study, we collected and analyzed all phases of geopolymer brick production from the extraction of raw materials to storage. Seven formulations of geopolymer bricks based on clay and waste bricks were analyzed. We considered the cost of raw materials and logistics operations in the production… Show more

“…Geopolymers are obtained following a chemical reaction between aluminosilicates oxides and hydroxide and/or alkaline silicate solutions (NaOH; KOH) [85,86], processed at a temperature below 100 • C to reduce water evaporation [87]. The advantages of using geopolymers consist in saving energy and CO 2 emissions [86].…”

“…Whereas, the compressive strength has reached up to 62 MPa while OPC based concrete showed up to 21 MPa [11]. In addition, energy and cost analysis of geopolymer brick synthesis in comparison with conventional bricks was found more economical as the production gained 5% profit for the development of slag-based geopolymer bricks [12]. In case of embodied energy of the geopolymer, the fly ash based manufactured geopolymer synthesis showed 40% less energy requirement as compared to cement-based concrete.…”

“…Geopolymer-based adsorbent possesses exceptional pollutant removal properties [23][24][25]. The geopolymer characteristics have made it a feasible and environmentally friendly option, compared to other materials such as biochar, zeolite and activated carbon, because of its more sustainable production process, which absorbs low energies and by-products [26][27][28]. Kaolin has the potential to be used as a raw material or an aluminosilicate source of geopolymer due to its high content of alumina and silica, which contributes to the formation of geopolymer based on sharing atoms of the (SiO4) 4− and (AlO4) 5− that may exist in poly-sialate form, poly sialatedisiloxo and other sialate linkages [29].…”
