Discarding practices have become a source of concern for the perennation of marine resources, prompting efforts of discard reduction around the globe. However, little is known about the fate of discards in marine environments. Discarding may provide food for various marine consumers, potentially affecting food web structure and stability. Yet, quantifying reliance upon discards is difficult because identity and frequency of discards may change according to multiple factors, and most previously used diet assessment techniques do not allow to assume consistency of feeding strategies over time. One currently untested hypothesis is that significant contribution of discards over time should reflect in increased trophic level (TL) of marine fauna, particularly in low TL consumers. Here, we explored this hypothesis by modeling the TL and assimilated diet of consumers living in fishing grounds subject to important discarding activity using stable isotope analysis. We found indications that benthic invertebrates and Chondrichthyes may depict a higher than expected TL, while other fish tend to depict similar to lower TL compared to global averages from the literature. Based on prior knowledge of discard consumption in the same area, stable isotope mixing models congruently revealed that discards may represent substantial portions of the assimilated diet of most benthic invertebrate macrofauna, cephalopods and Chondrichthyes. We highlight limitations and challenges of currently used diet assessment techniques to study discard consumption and stress that understanding their reintegration in marine food webs is crucial in the context of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and to better understand the functioning of marine ecosystems subject to fishing.

Door de toenemende bouw van windparken op de Noordzee krijgt medegebruik door vissers binnen die windparken steeds meer aandacht. Er is potentie voor een beperkt aantal vissers om gericht Noordzeekrab uit windparken met passieve tuigen te vangen. Tegelijk bestaan er ook uitdagingen die verder onderzoek behoeven. Denk aan het verdienmodel van passief vissen op krab, duurzaam beheer van de krabbenpopulatie en alternatieve afzetmarkten naast de lucratieve maar afhankelijke handel in levende krab naar China. Vanuit de markt hebben zowel krab als kreeft uit windparken op zee potentie. Echter, kreeft wordt slechts in zeer beperkte aantallen aangetroffen in windparken en dat beperkt de marktgroei. Noordzeekrab daarentegen komt in grotere aantallen voor in de windparken.Daarmee biedt de krab als lokaal product absoluut potentie.Due to the construction of increasing numbers of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, there is more attention for co-use by fishers within these wind farm areas. There is potential for a limited number of fishers to catch brown crab using passive gear in wind farms. At the same time, this poses challenges that require further research, such as the business model for passive fishery targeting brown crab, sustainable management of the crab population, and alternative markets besides the lucrative export market to China. From a market perspective both brown crab and European lobster from offshore wind farms offer potential. However, lobsters have only been found in wind farms in very limited numbers, which hampers the potential for market growth. Brown crab, on the other hand, has been observed in far greater numbers in wind farms. The North Sea (NS) is changing rapidly. Temporal variations in fishing intensity and eutrophic conditions, along with the ongoing impact of climate change, act in synergy resulting in modifications in marine communities. Although zooplankton has been extensively investigated, studies often ignore the large-sized meso- and macro-zooplankton (>500 µm), including holoplankton and meroplankton taxa. Here, we examined changes in abundances and community structure of these organisms between 1975 and 2018, using univariate and multivariate analysis, at different taxonomic levels. Abrupt changes in the abundances of (sub)communities occurred during different time periods and resulted in a significant restructuration of the entire community in 2006. These changes were consistent with the regime shifts reported in the NS and were a consequence of the environmental pressures on the whole community or on specific subcommunities. In the long term, the community shifted from higher abundances of hydrozoans and holoplankton taxa to an increasing abundance of decapods. Furthermore, we reveal the environmental variables that most explain the variability in the community dynamics, highlighting the importance of temperature and top-down processes. Our study underlines the relevance of investigations at different taxonomic levels, which elucidates how distinct responses to environmental changes ultimately shape the entire community structure.
