This study assessed the conservation and population status of the fish species collected from the Kelekar river. This study was conducted between May 2022 and June 2023. A total of 1.267 fish belonging to 49 species and 19 families were recorded. Cyprinidae was found to be the richest family (18 species) followed by Osphronemidae (5 species), Channidae (4 species), Siluridae (3 species), Bagridae, Claridae, Pangasidae, Pristolepidae (2 species), and others (1 species). The Shannon-Weiner diversity index was 3.547. The Simpson’s dominance index was 0.035, and the Evenness index was 0.921. The biodiversity index of the Kelekar river was in the high category. Base on the latest IUCN red list, one species as data deficient, forty-three species as least concern, two species as near threatened, two species as vulnerable, and one species as critically endangered. The IUCN based population status of fish species present in the Kelekar River was unknown (35%), stable (47%), and decreasing (18%).

Abstract. Dersita, Rambey R, Muhtadi A, Onrizal O, Mamurung VR, Hasibuan JS, Tamba IS. 2022. Biodiversity of nekton in the Barumun Watershed, Labuhanbatu District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2426-2432. Biodiversity is a very valuable source of germplasm for science and sustainable development. Therefore, research on freshwater biodiversity is very important to support the sustainability of this development. The research investigated three rivers in South Labuhanbatu District, North Sumatra, Indonesia: Barumun, Tasik, and Titi Kembar rivers. This investigation aims to ascertain the composition, distribution, and variety of nekton. From April to August 2020, the trial lasted five months. Nekton samples were collected with the aid of nets and fishing nets. While installed in the afternoon, the nets are removed the following day. Additionally, at each observation point, stocking nets were operated three times. The investigation discovered 38 fish species and one shrimp species. Two species of fish discovered, are protected by the government of the Republic of Indonesia. Both fish species are Tenualosa terubuk, a fish with little protection, and Fluvitrygon signifer, a ray fish with complete protection. The study site's sole shrimp species was the gigantic prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii in the Barumun river. The index of nekton diversity discovered in the three rivers was not identical. Compared to other rivers, the Tasik river station has a high diversity. This makes the Tasik river rich in fish compared to the Barumun and Titi Kembar rivers. The Tasik river is recommended as water suitable for fish life from these results.

“…A northern population of predatory asp, listed on the Bern Convention Appendix III, was studied in a near natural lake-river ecosystem by tracking adult fish tagged with acoustic transmitters for 32 months. Activity levels in terms of swimming speed, swimming distance and movement range were four times higher during the warmer part of the year (water temperatures > 12-15 °C, April/ freshwater fishes is the lack of information on the threatened species' environmental biology (Miranda and Miqueleiz 2021). This applies to the European cyprinid, asp Leuciscus aspius (L.), a migratory lithophilous and piscivorous fish, which is listed for protection in Annex III of the Bern Convention (Council of Europe 1979).…”

May-September), which coincides with their main feeding period, than other times of the year. All fish had an annual riverine movement range larger than 40 km (max 110 km). Asp activity was affected by light, habitat type and water discharge. For most of the year, activity levels, in terms of number of movements per time unit, were higher during dawn and dusk than during day and night. Under poor light conditions and low temperatures, activity was also relatively high during the day. Fish were more likely to swim upstream around sunrise or during the day than during other diel periods. Knowledge about highactivity periods, which may render the fish vulnerable to fishing and other impacts, can be used to develop and evaluate fishing regulations. Large annual movement ranges highlight the need for extensive continuous river systems open for migration between essential habitats. This study emphasises the need for region-specific research on the ecology and behaviour of fish populations in order to facilitate protection of the populations in the face of negative human impacts.
