Ecological wisdom has become an emerging field in the context of landscape planning and design practices for achieving sustainability and resilience. Several scholars have published empirical research papers in this field, and some have also conducted reviews to explore its concept and framework. However, since the empirical research varies, no study has made a systematic literature review and thus encountered difficulties in determining the research topic and problem. Moreover, the research approach and data analysis method could differ based on study site characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the research topic and problem discussed, site characteristics, and methodology of ecological wisdom studies from 2012 to 2021 by conducting systematic literature reviews involving descriptive analysis, and thematic analysis. The analysis of selected primary studies revealed that recent ecological wisdom studies focus on four topics: exploration, in-depth concept, method introduction, and evidence-based study. Most of the problems discussed in primary studies have focused on acquiring and applying ecological wisdom in practice for contemporary planning and design related to landscape sustainability and resiliency. The characteristics of the study sites were grouped into four categories: sites with unique landscape features, historical or preserved sites, sites with environmental problems or limitations, and sites with high biodiversity. The research methodology developed in ecological wisdom studies uses one or a combination of qualitative, quantitative, and/or spatial approaches involving field measurements and spatial modelling. Finally, the contribution, limitation, and opportunities for future improvements.

Both Oman and Iran possess a harsh environment where people’s survival and development entail a deep knowledge about their surroundings. A considerable part of this knowledge has crystallized around the falaj, a hydraulic technique that transfers water from a groundwater source or seasonal runoffs to cultivated lands, in Omani and Iranian oases, that has historically served as the only water source in an otherwise barren arid land. This article argues that the spatial extent of the falaj confronts local communities with a variety of questions to be solved. This article also tries to answer how the falaj system contributed to the development of modern sciences in a broader context. The article concludes that a transition from Indigenous knowledge to modern sciences has changed the position of local communities from coexistence to over-exploitation in terms of their water resources, and this transition can explain their current water problems.

Traditional rainwater harvesting systems have seen a shift of emphasis in recent years. While recognizing its social, economic and environmental contributions, sustainable use in a modern context can be vulnerable. Through a case study, this study focuses on the long-term sustainability of water cellars in traditional villages if reliable piped water is introduced. The aim is to discern the factors and renovation methods that influence residents’ willingness to continue using these water cellars. The results show that the overall willingness to use them is very low. However, regardless of their continued use or non-use, only a few residents would landfill them. Most residents were interested in their renovation, especially regarding simplifying rainwater harvesting methods. In addition, the management time for rainwater harvesting and heritage identity is positively correlated with the willingness for sustainable use; conversely, the identification of the environmental contribution has no positive correlation. Given these findings, we propose carrying out effective renovation that changes the rainwater catchment surface to roofs and increases residents’ awareness that water cellars can only be heritage if they are in use. By defining the long-term sustainability of a water cellar, this study shows how a quantitative approach focusing on heritage users can offer important insights into a constructive evolution rather than a destructive reconstruction under the influence of modernization. Finally, this study provides planners and water resource managers with effective, sustainable management practices for water cellars as well as similar systems in a historical context.
