Ecological epidemiology: the role of landscape structure in the transmission risk of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis (Leukart 1863) (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea: Taeniidae)

Abstract: The larval form of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis causes a fatal liver infection in humans and has high prevalence in western China. The tapeworm lifecycle involves small mammal populations and canids, such as foxes and dogs. Human contact with infected canids may lead to the transmission of the worm to humans, causing the disease human alveolar echinococcosis. This paper introduces the tapeworm and reviews the current understanding of its transmission ecology in relation to each component of its… Show more

“…Alternatively, in an epidemiological sense, these features might be mosquito ponds in a larger marsh or wet soil area; their abundance and distribution might help characterize risk for a neighboring village. It is this kind of contextual information about objects that proved so useful for Liu and Weng [102] and Graham and colleagues [103,104] in their examination of pattern and disease.…”

“…It is important to concede that these kinds of relationships can be built after-the-fact within a geographic information system (GIS) from any classification result [102][103][104], but they are more easily done as part of the classification process with OBIA. Indeed, such landscape analyses of pixel-based products are flawed, due to the speckle inherent in the results.…”

“…Semantic queries in image aspects require integrated visual as well as linguistic analysis that can be accomplished through effective visual translation. Specific approaches are found over the literature where as a generalized integrated attempt is less explored (Graham et al 2005;Bhaskaran et al 2010;Dambach et al 2011).…”
