ecosystem functions in the invaded regions, (iii) predict the ability of this species to invade European and transoceanic coastal waters, (iv) identify knowledge gaps that should be addressed to better understand the biology and ecology of this species both in its native and non-native habitats, which would improve our ability to predict H. stipulacea's potential to expand into new areas in the future. Considering the predicted climate change scenarios and exponential human pressures on coastal areas, we stress the need for coordinated global monitoring and mapping efforts that will record changes in H. stipulacea and its associated communities over time, across its native, invasive and prospective distributional ranges. This will require the involvement of biologists, ecologists, economists, modelers, managers, and local stakeholders.

The aim of the study was to examine the spatial and temporal variations in the physicochemical parameters of seagrass meadows of the Gulf of Mannar, South India using multivariate statistical techniques, namely, cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA), to explore the relationship. There were clear spatial and temporal variations in physicochemical variables of the seagrass meadow of the Gulf of Mannar, but such changes were subjected to seasonal variations especially during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The multivariate statistical techniques, viz., CA and PCA helped in the discrimination of islands according to the physicochemical parameters of the seagrass meadows. It was inferred that electrical conductivity, nitrate, particulate organic carbon, and phosphate strongly determined the discrimination of 19 islands, respectively, upon physicochemical characteristics of their seagrass meadows. These results highlight the important role of seagrasses in the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve.

Survival and growth of transplants of laboratory raised axenic seedlings of Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) Royle and field-collected plants of Syringodium isoetifolium (Aschers.) Dandy, Thalassia hemprichii (Ehrenb.) Aschers. and Halodule pinifolia (Miki) den Hartog Abstract Experimental transplantation investigations, using laboratory raised axenic seedlings of Enhalus acoroides and natural populations of Syringodium isoetifolium, Thalassia hemprichii and Halodule pinifolia in the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve, found that the denuded seagrass ecosystem of this Gulf can effectively be restored with plug and turfs methods of seagrass transplantation. Axenically developed E. acoroides, transplanted by the staples method, established by adapting to the prevailing environmental conditions. 0% seedlings "washed ashore" when the staples method was adopted using 'L' shaped bamboo sticks for transplanting E. acoroides and S. isoetifolium seedlings. This suggests that the seagrass transplantation using "L" shaped bamboo sticks, as staples will be technically feasible and ecofriendly for future seagrass transplantation programmes. Substratum type, duration of low tide exposure and environmental parameters like surface water temperature and turbidity are key parameters determining the success of the transplantation attempts.
