Ecological and morphological characteristics of parasitoids inPhauda flammans(Lepidoptera, Zygaenidae)

Abstract: Phauda flammans Walker (Lepidoptera, Zygaenidae) is one of the notorious defoliators on Ficus spp. trees. In order to avoid environmental pollution, potential biological control agents for P. flammans need to be investigated instead of chemical control. Four species of insect parasitoids were identified from P. flammans, including three hymenopteran species (i.e., Gotra octocinctus, Apanteles sp. and Eurytoma verticillata) and one dipteran species (i.e., Exorista yunnanica). Parasitoid ratios of G. octocinctus… Show more

“…P. flammans adults are active during the photophase that lasts from 6:00 to 16:00 h and mate from 9:00 to 19:00 h [32,43]. Although different management strategies have been explored to control P. flammans [46,47], chemical control is still one of the main management techniques. However, the overuse of insecticides could result in insect resistance to the most commonly used products as well as environmental contamination [48].…”

“…The pupae were kept in separate plastic containers (16 cm × 10 cm) closed with perforated plastic lids until adult emergence for species identification. In case of parasitism, the emerged parasitoids were conserved in 70% ethanol in glass vials (2.5 cm in diameter and 7.5 cm high) for species morphological identification [35][36][37] in collaboration with the Biosystematics Unit of International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).…”

“…Although four species of insect parasitoids were identified from P . flammans , their parasitoid ratios are very low, therefore chemical control is one of the main management techniques for P . flammans .…”
