Ecological and epidemiological data on Hantavirus in bank vole populations in Belgium

Abstract: Epidemiological and ecological data of a Hantavirus infected bank vole population were collected using live-trapping methods. A close association between the distribution of HV-infected bank voles and wet habitat types was found. Several seroconversions were observed during the life of individual bank voles. All seroconversions occurred within the wet habitat types and only after a certain age was reached. Survival of HV-infected bank voles did not differ from not-infected animals. In the laboratory passive an… Show more

“…Several hypotheses, not necessarily mutually exclusive, may be suggested to explain the patterns of maturation and survival we have described. In bank voles, the probability of acquiring PUUV infection has been found to increase with a proxy of age (body weight; Verhagen et al, 1986;Olsson et al, 2002). Hence, within the group of reproductively inactive bank voles, PUUV IgG-positive individuals might be older and, consequently, more likely to mature, or to die, in the near future.…”

“…These site-specific differences in bank vole dynamics probably reflect crucial attributes of the case sites (Hansson, 1990(Hansson, , 1999Lö fgren, 1995;). The population dynamics of bank voles and occurrence of PUU virus have previously been shown to be spatially heterogeneous at regional and local scales (Verhagen et al, 1986;Escutenaire et al, 2000). Because the pattern was consistent over time in the present study, these results emphasize the importance and relevance of identifying habitat features that are likely to be associated with increased risks of exposure to hantavirus.…”

“…Hantaviral antigens were detected by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-antigen capture as described elsewhere (Verhagen et al, 1986). Briefly, 10% lung suspensions were added to microtiter plates containing affinity-purified anti-PUU virus IgG from convalescent sera, with immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) titers not less than 16,000.…”
