Eco‐Friendly Vegetable Oil‐Based Metalworking Fluid (MWFs) from Modification of Glycolyzed Products of Polyurethane

Abstract: In order to produce environmentally friendly and efficient metalworking fluids and also to reduce the impact of waste polyurethane polymer in the environment, polyurethane polymers were recycled in a novel process. Waste polyurethane foam was glycolyzed using polyethylene glycol 400 to give the glycolyzed product (GPU). The GPU was esterified using oleic acid, linoleic acid, and acids obtained from hydrolysis of rapeseeds oil, coconut oil, and castor oil to obtain GPUO, GPUL, GPUA, GPUB, and GPUC, respectively… Show more

“…The amount of glycol and chemical additives employed determines the cutting fluid's density and viscosity. The density of cutting fluid varies depending on the additives, falling between 0.85 and 0.95 grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm 3 ) [10] and the viscosity ranging between 5 and 100 centistokes (cSt) at 40°C [11]. The configuration would make it easier to employ cutting fluid supplies for each machine and would also improve the cutting fluid's heat-absorbing, lubricating, and stability capabilities.…”

“…The protection of the metal throughout the handing out in the presence of the cutting fluid formulations was tested by copper strip test according to the standard method [38]. A copper strip was immersed in the different formulated metal cutting fluids (300 mL) at 25 oC in three replicates for 24 h and the test strip is observed for signs of rusting and the degree of rusting.…”
