East Indian Sandalwood Oil Is a Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor: A New Therapeutic Option in the Treatment of Inflammatory Skin Disease

Abstract: Cyclic adenosine monophosphate phosphodiesterases (PDEs) regulate pro-inflammatory cytokine production. One isoform, PDE4, is overactive in chronic relapsing inflammatory skin diseases: psoriasis and eczema/atopic dermatitis, and in several cancers. East Indian sandalwood oil (EISO) has significant anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we report that 75% of pediatric eczema/atopic dermatitis patients treated with topical EISO formulations achieved a >50% reduction in their Eczema Area and Severity Index score. E… Show more

“…The inhibition efficiency of FT oil (133.7 μg/mL) was about 78%, indicating its potential anti-inflammatory value. As reference, the aqueous extract of nutmeg showed over 90% inhibition efficiency on PDE-5 at 500 μg/mL [25]; in a cell model test, East Indian sandalwood oil showed about 70% inhibition efficiency on PDEs ata concentration of 0.0001–0.0002% [26].…”

“…Telah dilakukan juga beberapa penelitian yang membuktikan secara in vitro maupun in vivo mengenai efektivitas dari minyak Cendana sebagai antiinflamasi (Baylac, 2003;Li dkk., 2013;Puspawati dkk., 2017;M. Sharma dkk., 2014;Manju Sharma dkk., 2017, 2018. Bahkan menurut review dari Jain dan Nair, (2019) minyak Cendana memiliki khasiat lain selain antiinflamasi, yaitu penanganan pada dermatitis akibat radiasi, penanganan eczema dan psoriasis, penanganan pasien kronis angina pectoris, memiliki efek antivirus, efek antibakteri, efek antifungi, dan berpotensi sebagai antikanker kulit, serta memiliki profi keamanan yang dapat diterima dengan baik.…”

“…Sandalwood oil has a very pleasant and lasting scent and is widely used in the food and cosmetic industries . This naturally occurring product has also shown therapeutic and chemotherapeutic potentials for the treatment of skin diseases and some cancers. Sandalwood oil is traditionally steam-distilled from the heartwood and the roots of matured Indian sandalwood (Santalum album L.), a slow-growing fragrant tree . This traditional extraction suffers from a low yield and overharvesting of the sandalwood trees.…”
