Earthquake source parameters from GPS‐measured static displacements with potential for real‐time application

Abstract: [1] We describe a method for determining an optimal centroid-moment tensor solution of an earthquake from a set of static displacements measured using a network of Global Positioning System receivers. Using static displacements observed after the 4 April 2010, M W 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah, Mexico, earthquake, we perform an iterative inversion to obtain the source mechanism and location, which minimize the least-squares difference between data and synthetics. The efficiency of our algorithm for forward modeling sta… Show more

“…However, traditional approaches typically require strong regularization if near-field data are to be used, because the associated optimization problem becomes unstable and highly nonunique. In particular, in the case of the El Mayor-Cucapah event, other researchers have found a need to apply strong damping to suppress spurious non-double-couple components and to stabilize the iterative optimization process when inverting a similar static displacement dataset as the one used here for point-source parameters (O'Toole et al, 2013). Here and in Käufl et al (2014), there appears to be no need for additional measures to account for finite-source effects in the case of this event.…”

“…Point-source inversions using either a similar GPS displacement waveform dataset or using static offsets extracted from the displacement time series have recently been conducted by Melgar et al (2012), Zheng et al (2012), O'Toole et al (2013), and Käufl et al (2014) and have shown a good agreement to catalog solutions, although with large uncertainties attached to some of the source parameters.…”

“…Instead of adopting coseismic displacements, O'Toole et al [] developed an algorithm to get centroid moment tensor using high‐rate GPS waveforms. They also suggested an alternative to the fastCMT approach by simultaneously searching for the best centroid position [ O'Toole et al , ]. Crowell et al [] inverted real‐time GPS data for a finite fault slip distribution in homogeneous elastic half‐space.…”
