Early Puberty-Menarche After Precocious Pubarche: Relation to Prenatal Growth

Abstract: The link between prenatal growth restraint and early menarche is herewith extended to PP girls. In particular LBW-PP girls may become a target group for interventions directed toward normalization of pubertal onset and progression.

“…For instance, prepubertal restriction or excess of food and adiposity may lead to delayed or early puberty, respectively (Biro et al, 2006;Dunger et al, 2006;Ong et al, 2004Ong et al, , 2006Cheng et al, 2012;Himes, 2006;Roa and Tena-Sempere, 2010) whereas intrauterine growth restriction is associated with early puberty (Ibanez et al, 2011(Ibanez et al, , 2006 in humans. Similarly, psychosocial stress during prepuberty or puberty may cause pubertal delay or arrest (van Noord and Kaaks, 1991;Tahirovic, 1998) whereas advancement of puberty has been described in children who had experienced such stress in early postnatal life or infancy (Moffitt et al, 1992;Wierson et al, 1993).…”

“…A less heterogeneous condition could be the premature increase in adrenal androgens or premature adrenarche. In this condition where the exposure to unusually high levels of androgens is presumably in the prepubertal period, early menarche has been reported as a function of the severity of intrauterine growth retardation (Ibanez et al, 2006). Treatment with metformin prevents the advancement of menarche (Ibanez et al, 2011) indicating that the determinant of pubertal timing in that condition may be related to prenatal nutritional status (see Section 3.1.2.1) and postnatal insulin sensitivity with no or minor role of adrenal androgens.…”

“…The onset of puberty is one of the key characteristics of this event (Palmert & Boepple 2001, Palmert & Hischhorn 2003, Sisk & Foster 2004, Francis 2005. The calculated heritability in previous studies suggested that up to 50 to 80% of the variance in the timing of pubertal onset may be genetically controlled (Meyer et al 1991, Loesch et al 1995, Palmert & Boepple 2001, Ibanez et al 2006. Genetic analysis indicated that familial central precocious puberty was an autosomal dominant transmission with an incomplete, sexdependent penetrance (Vries et al 2004).…”
