Summary This paper discusses the critical period of adolescence and its potential role in the development and persistence of obesity. The adolescent years are characteristic of changes in body composition (location and quantity of body fat), physical fitness and decreased insulin sensitivity during puberty. This period of growth and maturation is also marked with behavioural changes in diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviour and psychological health. Physical activity and sport participation decline during adolescence especially in teenage girls, while sedentary behaviour, risk for depression and body esteem issues increase during the teenage years. These physiological and behavioural changes during adolescence warrant the attention of health practitioners to prevent the onset and continuation of obesity throughout the lifespan.

Objective: To investigate the effects of treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) on final height in girls who experienced moderately early puberty with symptoms beginning at 7-8.5 years of age.Methods: Female cases diagnosed with moderately early puberty which had started between ages 7 to 8.5 years were included in the study. In the treatment groups, all cases with a bone age ≤10.5 years constituted group 1 (n=18) and those with a bone age >10.5 years constituted group 2 (n=23). The 8 patients for which treatment approval could not be obtained constituted group 3. The 49 cases in all three groups were observed until they reached their final height.Results: Target height, target height standard deviation score (SDS), final height, and final height SDS values were similar in all 3 groups. Final height showed a significant positive correlation with target height (p=0.000, r=0.54) and height at diagnosis (p=0.003, r=0.467) in all groups. Linear regression analysis revealed that a 1 cm longer height at diagnosis increased the final height 0.213 fold, and a 1 cm longer target height at diagnosis increased the final height 0.459 fold.Conclusion: We found that GnRHa did not make a positive contribution to final height in cases of moderately early puberty.

Tabla 2. Agentes citotóxicos más usados en Pediatría. Bloqueadores de la síntesis proteica L-Asparraginasa La radioterapia también tiene como finalidad la erradicación tumoral. Mediante la irradiación se generan moléculas con radicales libres altamente reactivas que alteran la estructura del ADN, llevando a una alteración en la proliferación celular. Se puede utilizar antes de la cirugía en un tumor inoperable, o con posterioridad a la misma para eliminar restos tumorales. También puede estar indicada en los síndromes dolorosos o compresivos producidos por el tumor o sus metástasis. Como las secuelas a largo plazo de la irradiación son dosis-dependientes, los niños que la precisan se tratan con la menor dosis eficaz. Sin embargo, la dosis de radioterapia, su fraccionamiento, la duración del tratamiento y el campo de irradiación dependerán del tipo de cáncer, la extensión de la enfermedad, la edad del paciente y su tolerancia al tratamiento. En general, los efectos adversos derivados de la radioterapia no aparecen de forma inmediata tras su administración, sino que se presentan después de un periodo de latencia más o menos Introducción 7 largo 7,10,11 .
