Early Nutrition Intervention Attenuates Weight Gain for Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Patients in Maintenance Therapy

Abstract: Obesity following treatment of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has become a significant long-term concern. Excessive weight gain often occurs during treatment, particularly during induction and the first 6 months of maintenance therapy, and it may be potentially modifiable. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of an early, 3-visit nutrition intervention on weight gain during maintenance therapy in ALL patients. Medical records of the intervention group were compared with historica… Show more

“…We report nutritional interventions (n 9) (Table 4) that have an educational aim to improve nutritional or cooking knowledge or eating habits in patients with cancer and their families. Almost half (n 4) of the studies were conducted with ALL patients (58)(59)(60)(61) and, in three studies interventions were performed during the maintenance phase (59)(60)(61) when patients are prone to weight gain.…”

“…Hill et al (61) compared weight gain between a control group (n 34) recruited before the initiation of the intervention and an intervention group (n 33) who received three nutrition sessions with a dietitian during the first 6 months of the maintenance phase. The counselling was standardised and included goal setting for the family.…”

“…Most of the existing nutrition education interventions in childhood cancer were designed for patients at the end of their treatment or for survivors [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] and few have included a culinary component [21,22]. However, intervening at the end of cancer treatment might be too late to reverse the acquired food habits [18]. While this supports the need for early interventions, their feasibility in the context of a recent diagnosis and initiation of treatment is unknown.…”
