“…We have successfully used 20-30 kg lambs for evaluation of our pediatric devices, 11,16 and a group at Penn State also successfully used 20-25 kg lambs for their pediatric VADs. A small animal model is necessary to properly evaluate function and biocompatibility of MCS devices; however, small animals in the growth phase can grow very quickly and outgrow the capacity of the MCS devices during long-term evaluation.…”

“…To fill this gap, we are currently developing a pediatric version of a continuous-flow TAH (P-CFTAH) by downsizing the adult device by a scale factor of 0.70 (1/3 of the total volume). [14][15][16] A new generation of minimally invasive MCS devices is also under development to support CHD and Fontan physiology. 17 Finally, the experience of the implant center is also key for device selection.…”

“…Yet, for the realization of this next milestone in ECLS therapy, further technological improvements are needed. Current research focuses on the development of wearable and integrated devices, such as the MLung, 47 PAL 33 and RasQ. 8 However, these new integrated and wearable devices designed for ambulatory long-term treatment are in need of improved connections to the patient's vessels.…”
