Early impact of oil palm planting density on vegetative and oil yield variables in West Africa

Abstract: -A range of various different planting distances (from 7.5 to 9.5 m) between oil palms were tested using an equilateral triangle design in a plantation density experiment which was settled in an oil palm commercial plantation in Nigeria. Climatic conditions were quite stable, with two seasons and around 2000 mm of annual rainfall. The soil was of desaturated ferralitic type, sandy on the surface, deep and without coarse elements. The early impact of plantation density was analysed at eight years after planting… Show more

“…While the high densities were still largely ahead in terms of cumulative yield at the end of the eighth year (Bonneau et al, 2014), they fell back considerably between the ninth and twelfth years after planting. The competition effect increased due to the regular rise in vegetative bulk.…”

“…These were described in detail in the earlier article (Bonneau et al, 2014). As the same palms were involved, in the same place and in the same experimental design, only a brief reminder will be given again here.…”

“…Kelapa sawit secara komersil ditanam dengan kerapatan 120-150 tanaman per hektar (Woittiez et al, 2017). Produksi TBS (Tandan Buah Segar) per pohon tertinggi muncul ketika ditanam pada kerapatan 143 pohon/ha (Bonneau et al, 2014). Kerapatan optimal bisa didapatkan berdasarkan indeks luas daun (ILD/Leaf Area Index).…”

“…Oil palm tree density is one of the parameters used to determine if replanting is needed and affects oil palm production (Ng, 1972;Corley, 1973;Breure et al, 1990;Corley and Tinker, 2003;Huth et al, 2014;Bonneau et al, 2014). Therefore, one way to increase oil palm production has been to develop new varieties that are suitable for planting at high densities (Breure, 2010).…”
