The deep thermal well Obermoos TH-1 (total depth 2468 m, year 1990) was drilled within the Upper Cretaceous Salzburg-Reichenhall basin of the Northern Calcareous Alps at the southwestern edge of Salzburg city, Austria. The lithologic log shows c. 200 m thick Quaternary sediments of the glacially overdeepened Salzach Valley above bedrock. The Quaternary infill is underlain by c. 250 m thick, almost horizontally lying coarse clastics and marls, which belong to the Upper Cretaceous Salzburg-Reichenhall Gosau basin. From 456 m to 2468 m, a steeply dipping, more or less continuous succession from Cenomanian strata to Upper Triassic Hauptdolomit was encountered. This succession is considered being part of the Bajuvaric nappe of the central Northern Calcareous Alps, which is entirely overridden by units of the Tyrolic arc in the study area. The new data from the deep drilling provides (i) new information on depth and filling of the deeper parts of the Pleistocene valley and (ii) new insights into the complex structure of the Bajuvaric nappe. We also discuss a potential fault crossing the Salzburg-Reichenhall basin being part of the Cenozoic Innsbruck-Salzburg-Amstetten fault system. On a larger scale, the Tyrolic unit exposed in the southern margin of the Salzburg-Reichenhall basin and potentially overlying the borehole section must be the same as in the flat-laying Tyrolic nappe found in two deep drill holes, 15 km southeast and 18 km east of the City of Salzburg (Vigaun 1 and Vordersee 1).

Abstract. The early Eocene is characterized by a succession of orbitally-controlled global stable carbon isotope excursions, with some being linked to climatic and related biotic perturbations. The impact of these isotopic excursions has been primarily studied in deep-sea sections under comparably stable conditions. In order to investigate the impact of global post-PETM isotopic signals on shallow marine settings, the Ypresian neritic ʻBlue Marls' of the Corbières (SW France) were investigated. High-resolution records of microfossil biota and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes pinpoint biostratigraphic, paleoecologic and geochemic constraints. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy positions the sequence in the upper part of zone NP11, possibly ranging into basal NP12, which is conformable with larger benthic foraminifera data indicating shallow benthic zone SBZ8. This implies a time span of about 0.4 Myr and high overall sedimentation rates of about 32 cm/kyr for the section. A shallowing upward trend from outer neritic to coastal settings is observed in the development of the lithostratigraphy and the microfossil assemblage. The assemblages can be subdivided in seven larger biofacies and four ostracod assemblage zones. The lower third of the section is characterized by strongly fluctuating and partly high plankton/benthos-ratios for neritic settings. A final pronounced peak in plankton occurrence is associated with strong decrease of benthic biota, suggesting anoxic conditions in the outer neritic environment. Several local negative δ 13 C-and δ 18 O-excursions can be identified in the section. The upper, most pronounced and consistent negative δ 13 C excursion is tentatively linked to global carbon isotope excursion K (ETM3) based on the biostratigraphic constraints.

23 layers of altered volcanic ash (bentonites) originating from the North Atlantic Igneous Province have been recorded in early Eocene deposits of the Austrian Alps, about 1,900 km away from the source area. The Austrian bentonites are distal equivalents of the ''main ash-phase'' in Denmark and the North Sea basin. We have calculated the total eruption volume of this series as 21,000 km 3 , which occurred in 600,000 years. The most powerful single eruption of this series took place 54.0 million years ago (Ma) and ejected ca. 1,200 km 3 of ash material, which makes it one of the largest basaltic pyroclastic eruptions in geological history. The clustering of eruptions must have significantly affected the incoming solar radiation in the early Eocene by the continuous production of stratospheric dust and aerosol clouds. This hypothesis is corroborated by oxygen isotope values, which indicate a global decrease of sea surface temperatures between 1 and 2°C during this major phase of explosive volcanism.
