“…The senior author implanted 199 Rejuvenate modular stems between April 2010 and March 2012 and the revision rate is approximately 30%, consistent with previous clinical series [3]. From this group of patients, we have collected a consecutive series of 59 Rejuvenate Modular hip implants from 54 patients.…”

“…Symptomatic patients were found to have pain, elevated chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) ion levels, and adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs). Certain series have shown that up to thirty percent of patients with Rejuvenate stems are symptomatic [3]. The Rejuvenate modular stem was designed to allow the surgeon intra-operative flexibility to optimize stability, range of motion and leg length by adjusting the neck length.…”

“…Interest into their degradation mechanisms and biomechanics has been renewed due to the public withdrawal and recall of some products [11]. A number of recent publications have detailed the clinical presentation at revision, surface topography and regions in which degradation are commonly found [12][13][14][15]. All studies are consistent, reporting that…”

“…In the present series, creating the configurations possible using the different modular necks would have required five different models of monolithic stems to be available in the operating room, which would have incurred greater cost and complexity for the hospital inventory. However, the additional junction between a stem and a modular neck could increase risks of fretting corrosion and prosthetic fracture at the neck-stem interface, reported in several series (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). The surgical and biomechanical advantages of modularity are recognised, but its clinical benefits remain controversial (1,17,18).…”
