“…Studies of historical cartography have frequently involved a descriptive analysis of the work of particular cartographers (De Vorsey 1966; Thrower 1969; Smith 1981; Manners 1997; Widder 1999; Mason 2002). Other qualitative work has concentrated on what Harley (1968) terms “comparative cartography” in an effort to trace the development of cartographic knowledge through a chronological series of antecedent maps (Lewis 1966, 1980; Peters 1972; Heidenreich 1981, 1988; Birtley 1983a, b; Smith 1989; Rubin 1990).
