Early adolescents’ perceptions of parenting practices and mental health problems: A network approach.

Abstract: This study aims to identify possible primary targets for the parenting programs designed to reduce (or prevent) the mental health problems of adolescents. We used network analysis to estimate networks for parenting practices and for the interplay between parenting practices and adolescents' mental health problems. A community sample of early adolescents (10-13 years old, N = 1,125) reported both parenting (Alabama Parenting Questionnaire, Child Global Report) and mental health outcomes (Youth Self-Report). The… Show more

“…Contemporaneous networks in our study revealed how distinct maternal parenting practices were uniquely associated with adolescent mental health problems. For instance, the link between maternal monitoring and adolescent conduct problems served as the main pathways through which the two sets of constructs mutually influenced, which was consistent with the cross-sectional network result conducted in a different cultural context [ 23 ]. A previous structural equation model research also suggested that parental monitoring can have an impact on delinquent behavior both directly and indirectly through contacts with delinquent peers [ 58 ].…”

“…So far, there are only two studies investigated the network of parenting practices and adolescent mental health problems. In one of the studies, monitoring behavior was the most influential node with high levels of centrality in the parenting network [ 23 ]. This study also showed the association of poor monitoring with conduct problems served as the primary pathway through which parenting behavior and adolescent mental health mutually influenced.…”

“…A study suggested that rural parents had poorer parenting resources and reported higher levels of negative parenting (i.e., indicated by high levels of negative control, hostility, and rejection) [ 46 ]. Hence, poorer access to mental support services, as well as more negative parenting, may hinder the healthy development of rural adolescents and contribute to the occurrence of depression [ 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Finally, future studies should consider the use of multiple informants to assess parental and child variables. Until now, studies that assessed the interaction of parental and child variables using network analysis used either child (e.g., Florean et al, 2022b ) or parent report. However, it has been argued that the perspective on child and parental variables could differ between parents and children (Florean et al, 2022a ).…”
