Eagle Syndrome: an underdiagnosed cause of orofacial pain

Abstract: Eagle Syndrome (ES), also termed stylohyoid syndrome or styloid syndrome, is a rare condition characterised by a cluster of symptoms related to an elongation of the styloid process (SP) of the temporal bone. “…The diagnosis of stylohyoid syndrome is primarily based upon clinical symptomatology, and supported by radiographic imaging, preferably high‐resolution computed tomography (CT) scan with three‐dimensional reconstruction. Findings of a styloid process longer than 30 mm is supportive of the diagnosis 1,4 . Extraoral physical exam may reveal a palpable mass below the angle of the mandible, or tenderness along the muscles of mastication or temporomandibular joint.…”

“…Eagle syndrome, also known as stylohyoid syndrome or styloid syndrome, is a rare orofacial pain syndrome characterized by a constellation of ill-defined symptoms including otalgia, pharyngeal foreign body or globus sensation, dysphagia/odynophagia, headaches, tinnitus, and balance disorders. 1,2 First described by otolaryngologist Watt Eagle, Eagle syndrome is related to abnormal elongation of the stylohyoid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. [1][2][3] The diagnosis of stylohyoid syndrome is primarily based upon clinical symptomatology, and supported by radiographic imaging, preferably high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scan with three-dimensional reconstruction.…”
