E-mail system for Delay Tolerant Network

Abstract: DTN protocol can overcome network problems such as intermittent connectivity, long or variable delay, asymmetric data rates, and high error rates. TCP/IP protocol, a common network protocol currently used for the internet, cannot handle these problems. By using postfix and DTN2, we can build a DTN-based e-mail server that is capable of sending and receiving e-mails even the server is not continuously connected to a network. This also requires a new method to send and receive e-mails. Postfix is used for managi… Show more

“…DTN technology is different from the previous working protocol concept, TCP/IP which relies on upon continuing connectivity or every sent file will be lost when the connection is lost. DTN is suitable for use in extreme areas (black hole) so the concept of Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a solution for border areas and can be applied by utilizing mobile vehicles that act as DTN router [13] [14] [15] The router will collect every file that will be transmitted and when it gets a location that has TCP/IP protocol internet access, the Router will distribute the collected data to be transmitted. The movement of DTN Router from one node to another node is continuous following the concept of flooding algorithm [16].…”

“…In the developing areas, the DTNs are used on the project DakNet by using buses, motorcycles, and bicycles as relay nodes [16], KioskNet using buses and cars [17], a system of Internet services countryside by trains [18][19][20], and remote consultation services [21][22][23]. In the disconnected areas of the project are Saami Network Connectivity (SNC) using volunteers [24,25] and the local mining using trucks and miners [26].…”

“…The packet data is forwarded if the link to destination available. DTN protocol is addressed for network characteristic with intermittent connectivity, long and variable delay, high error rates and no guarantee of end-to-end connectivity between source and destination [2]. The DTN architecture use store and forward message switching with implements a bundle layer between transport layer and application layer.…”
