The potential of the different Phoma exigua var. exigua strains for the biocontrol of the perennial weeds Sonchus arvensis and Cirsium arvense, occurring throughout temperate regions of the world, has been evaluated in previous studies. The majority of the above strains produced ascosonchine, a newly discovered enol tautomer of 4- pyridylpyruvic acid, whereas strains C-177 and S-9, though virulent to weeds, did not produce the above metabolite. In this study, it was demonstrated that the above two strains, grown in liquid and solid cultures, produced p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, cytochalasins B, F, Z2 and Z3, and deoxaphomin. When assayed on the leaves of both C. arvense and S. arvensis, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde was inactive, whereas deoxaphomin demonstrated the highest level of toxicity on leaves of S. arvensis. Cytochalasin Z2 appeared to be the less toxic cytochalasan on both plants according to the lack of the secondary hydroxyl group on C-7. Production of cytochalasins by P. exigua var. exigua strains isolated from C. arvense and S. arvensis is discussed in relation to chemotaxonomy and the biocontrol potential of the fungus.

Phomalevones A-C (1-3), three new com-pounds with bis-dihydroxanthone and bis-benzophenone systems, were isolated from cultures of a Hawaiian isolate of Phoma sp. (MYC-1734 = NRRL 39060; Cucurbitariaceae). The structures of 1-3 were determined by analysis of NMR and MS data. The absolute configurations of the sp(3) stereocenters in the monomeric unit of 1 were assigned by application of Mosher's method, and overall absolute configurations were proposed on the basis of ECD data using both computational methods and comparisons with literature data for model compounds. All three compounds showed antibacterial activity, and compounds 2 and 3 also exhibited antifungal effects.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar a causa de lesões necróticas em folhas de soja, caracterizar o patógeno causador das lesões e verificar a patogenicidade dos isolados por meio do Postulado de Koch. Foram obtidos isolados a partir de lesões necróticas típicas de Phoma de folhas de soja coletadas nos estados de Mato Grosso e Minas Gerais. Culturas puras foram obtidas em extrato de malte 2%, a partir de picnídios presentes nas folhas. A identificação dos isolados foi realizada de acordo com o Manual de Identificação de Phoma (Boerema et al., 2004). Foram selecionados 10 isolados de Phoma, separados em 3 grupos de morfotipos distintos. Para o teste de patogenicidade foram plantadas mudas de soja cultivar Conquista até atingir o estádio com três trifólios (3V). As mudas foram inoculadas com suspensão de 106 conídios mL-1, cobertas com sacos plásticos transparentes e acondicionadas em câmara de crescimento vegetal a 20°C e fotoperíodo de 12 horas. Os sintomas foram avaliados no 3°, 6°, 9° e 12° dia após a inoculação. Utilizou-se delineamento, inteiramente ao acaso, com cinco repetições e dois tratamentos. Os isolados obtidos a partir de lesões necróticas de folhas de plantas de soja, apesar de apresentarem inóculos viáveis, após sua inoculação não induziram sintomas típicos de Mancha de Phoma. Alguns fatores podem ser destacados como inibidores de sintoma, como: temperatura não favorável ao desenvolvimento do fungo; cultivar utilizada ser resistente ao fungo inoculado; momento de inoculação não ser realizado no estádio de desenvolvimento em que a planta apresenta sintomas.
