Dynamism of Antimicrobial Activity of Actinomycetes—A Case Study from Undisturbed Microbial Niche

Abstract: Escalation of drug resistant microbes (bacteria) had forced researchers to search new and improved therapeutic compounds from different possible sources, including metabolites secreted by the actinomycetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of antimicrobial actinomycetes from physiologically distinct soil of different geographical locations. Forty five soil samples were collected from 5 districts of Gujarat including two sanctuaries as source of survey for bioactive actinomycetes. Crowded plate… Show more

“…Patil et al [38] reported that 77 isolates out of 104 were found to be inhibitory to at least one of the pathogens. Also, Patel et al [39] reported that 79% of the actinomycetes isolates were active against at least one of the 18 tested pathogens. In a recent study, Rana and Salam [9] characterized 23 actinomycetes isolates, 7 of which showed significant inhibition of different Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and also some fungi, with zones of inhibition up to 20 mm.…”

“…In the current study, the isolated actinomycetes showed high antagonistic activity against several pathogenic fungi and bacteria. Patel et al (2014) reported that 79% of the actinomycetes isolates were active against at least one of the 18 tested pathogens. Other reports indicated that actinomycetes isolates showed inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of plant pathogenic fungi like Alternaria mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporides, F. oxysporum (Lim et al, 2000); against yeasts and gram positive and gram negative antibiotic resistant pathogens (Thirumalairaj et al, 2015).…”

“…All the isolates were gram positive and showed different morphological characteristics on half strength Nutrient agar [12]. Many researchers have successfully isolated actinomycetes from various sources like [15], termite gut [16], plant [17], mud [18] and marine [19].…”
