Antibacterial and anticancer activity of marineStreptomyces parvus: optimization and application

Abstract: A total of 17 actinomycetes were isolated and screened against five bacterial pathogens. Forty-one per cent of the isolates were active against the tested pathogens. The most potent isolate was identified as Streptomyces parvus by using a 16S rRNA sequence analysis. S. parvus produced active compound(s) against a number of Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. The obtained inhibition zones were 14, 19, 20 and 20 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrop… Show more

“…Elnaby et al . (61) tested the antiviral activity of di-n-octyl phthalate isolated from a marine actinomycetes isolate ( S. parvus ) against hepatitis C virus (HCV). Compounds produced by Pseudoalteromonas piscida contained benzene 1-pentyloctyl, benzene 1-butylheptyl and di-n-octyl phthalate, and these compounds were found to be active against HCV (62).…”

“…Several cancer cell lines were shown to be susceptible including MCF-7. S. parvus extract has also been shown to be active against breast cancer cell lines [28]. Isolation and structure elucidation of the compounds responsible for the bioactivities of Streptomyces sp.…”

“…Water contamination due to pathogenic microorganisms and invasive species has become a global concern. Such contamination of water has a harmful influence not only on the environment, but also on human health [1,2]. Moreover, it has been reported as a critical issue in seawater that 7000 or more different microbial species are annually transported through ballast water, resulting in destruction and contamination of marine ecosystems [3][4][5].…”
