Résumé -Cette étude, menée à l'est de la ville de Lomé (capitale et plus grande ville du Togo), met en évidence la dynamique spatiale des cultures maraîchères en réponse à la pression foncière. Abstract -Peri-urban market gardening centrifugal dynamics in Lomé (Togo) in response to land pressure. This study, conducted in the eastern part of the city of Lomé (capital and largest city of Togo), highlights the spatial dynamics of market gardening under land pressure. TerraMetrics satellite images from Google Earth archives for 2002, 2008 and 2014 were selected for the market gardening evolution analysis. A field survey based on semi-structured questionnaires was conducted to identify the gardeners' strategies. The observation points that geographical coordinates were recorded using a GPS sensor. Garden areas were evaluated using the QGIS software coupled with the Excel spreadsheet. The spatial and descriptive evolution of the market gardening areas since 2002 has thus been known. It was also possible to understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of these areas and to evaluate the strategies developed by the gardeners to cope with the land shortage. Market gardening land status is precarious; in average, surveyed gardeners lost 31 ha per year between 2002 and 2014, the total market gardening surface area falling from 530 to 160 ha.

The quality of irrigation water from different sources used by urban vegetable producers, the watered soils and vegetables in Ouagadougou was investigated. From December 2012 to December 2013, samples of water (97), lettuces heads (20), manure (10) and soil (9) were collected and analyzed for their parasitological quality using modified Bailenger methods. The result shows that parasites concentration in samples (1 to 11 egg/L in water, 0.45 egg/g on lettuce and 0.48 egg/g in soil) are above the threshold levels set by WHO/FAO for unrestricted irrigation. Different protozoa and helminthes belonging to 9 species were identified in the samples analyzed. These include Ankylostoma duodenalis, Hymenolepis nana, Ascaris lombricoïdes, Taenias ssp., Strongyloides stercoralis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba coli. Despite variation in isolated parasites, eggs of A. lumbricoïdes and A. duodenalis were common in all water, soil and vegetables. Furthermore 14.87% of collected eggs have proven to be viable with predominance of helminthes eggs. As a result, farmers appear to be the most exposed group to helminthiasis.

Greywater Treatment by High Rate Algal Pond under Sahelian Conditions for Reuse in Irrigation

High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) was constructed and operated using a mixer device to investigate its capability in treating greywater for reuse in gardening. Physico-chemical and microbiological parameters were monitored. With a hydraulic retention time of 7.5 days and a solid retention time of 20 days, the average removal efficiencies (ARE) were 69% and 62% for BOD5 and COD respectively. The ARE for 3 NO − , 4 NH + and 4 PO 3− were 23%, 52% and 43% respectively. The removal of suspended solids (SS) was unsatisfactory, which could be attributed to the low average algal settling efficiencies of 9.3% and 16.0% achieved after 30 and 60 minutes respectively. The ARE of fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci were 2.65, 3.14 and 3.17 log units respectively. In view of the results, the HRAP technology could be adapted for greywater treatment in sahelian regions. However, further studies on the diversity of the algal species growing in the HRAP unit are necessary in order to increase the removal of SS. Hazards of a reuse of the effluents are discussed on the basis of the various qualitative parameters. The residual content of E. coli was varying from <1 to 1.77 × 10 4 CFU per 100 mL. Based on WHO guidelines for greywater reuse in irrigation, the effluents could be used for restricted irrigation (E. coli < 10 5 CFU per 100 mL). Furthermore, the reuse potential is discussed on the basis of FAO guidelines using SAR (3.03 to 4.11), electrical conductivity (482 to 4500 µS/cm) and pH values (6.45 to 8.6).
