Dynamics of Sheep Production in Brazil

Abstract: Abstract:Sheep production is present on all continents and has been practiced in Brazil since the colonization. In this study, the multitemporal dynamics of sheep production in Brazil is examined using official government data (Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics-IBGE) from 1976 to 2010. Maps of flock growth rates and growth acceleration maps by municipality were elaborated. The Southern states are seen to show a reduction in production mainly due to the wool crisis in the 1970s and 80s. The North… Show more

“…It can be noted that the midpoint for the two most popular breeds (Santa Inês and Dorper) is close to the midpoint production for all breeds (Hermuche et al, 2013b). Most of the naturalized breeds are to the northeast of these, while the commercial breeds are to the southwest as well as the Crioula.…”

“…The commercial hair breeds (Dorper, White Dorper and Santa Inês) were in the same cluster as the naturalized breeds. This reflects their wider distribution, especially in regions such as the North and Centerwest which have few other breeds and a more recent development of sheep farming (Hermuche et al, 2013b).…”

“…The demand for lamb meat in the country rose by 5% between the years 2000 and 2007, totaling a per capita consumption of 0.7 kg year -1 (FAO, 2013). However, the demand for lamb meat can be considered low when compared with other meats such as beef, pork, and poultry (HERMUCHE et al, 2013a(HERMUCHE et al, , 2013b. Some factors exert a great influence on lamb meat consumption, mainly those associated with eating habits and purchasing power (PAIM et al, 2011).…”

“…Figure 7 shows the spatial distribution of the following climatic factors compiled by [27] In addition to the climatic factor, the adoption of inappropriate management practices and the lack of technology and agricultural machinery lead to a decline in productivity [36]. In the absence of adequate information on the specific characteristics of bean production, we examined the last census of Brazilian agriculture for the year 2006 developed by a collaboration between the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, 2009).…”
